Requirements

  • Minimum of Community College (CET equivalent)
  • Valid Ontario second class stationary engineers certificate or Building operator certificate or trade license (Millwright, Electrician, Plumber or Steam fitter) or equivalent.
  • Strong mechanical and HVAC background
  • Ability to read mechanical, electrical and control drawings
  • Knowledge of building automation system, life safety system, electrical systems and HVAC including boiler, chiller, cooling tower, pumps, motors, heat exchanger, AHU, etc.
  • 5-10 years of leadership position in the facilities management field
  • Minimum 5–7 years of progressive facility maintenance or plant operations experience.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience managing unionized maintenance staff.
  • Experience operating and maintaining complex institutional, healthcare, laboratory, industrial, or commercial facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience managing contractors, preventive maintenance programs, and regulatory compliance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and supervise unionized maintenance staff, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company policies, procedures, and collective agreement requirements.
  • Oversee the operation, maintenance, and performance of all building systems, including HVAC, BAS, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, electrical systems, emergency power systems, life safety systems, and other critical infrastructure.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate preventive maintenance programs, corrective repairs, shutdowns, and capital projects to ensure facility reliability and minimize downtime.
  • Manage contractors, service providers, and maintenance vendors, ensuring work is completed to quality, safety, and compliance standards.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance, technical documentation, certifications, maintenance records, and asset information while ensuring adherence to all applicable legislation, safety standards, and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Monitor inventory levels, maintenance resources, and operational expenditures to support cost-effective facility operations and budget objectives.
  • Foster strong client relationships by addressing operational concerns, providing regular updates, and ensuring service levels meet or exceed expectations.
  • Support workforce planning through employee recruitment, onboarding, training, performance management, and professional development initiatives.
  • Utilize CMMS and other maintenance management tools to track work orders, monitor performance, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Participate in after-hours on-call support, emergency response activities, meetings, reporting requirements, and other duties as assigned.
