About The Position

The Uhealth Laboratories Department at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Supervisor, Phlebotomy. The Supervisor, Phlebotomy assumes responsibility for the daily supervision of phlebotomy operations within their specified location, including the daily operation and duties of phlebotomists. The incumbent performs, teaches, and monitors all functions within the laboratory, including but not limited to, scheduling, specimen collection, labeling, receipt, processing, delivery, and archiving. This individual collaborates with various health professionals within the organization to complete tasks daily.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience required
  • Phlebotomist Certification
  • BLS certification (AHA)
  • Management: Ability to set performance goals, provide feedback, conduct evaluations, and effectively delegate tasks.
  • Training & Development: Providing employee training and motivation to enhance skills.
  • Team Leadership: Ability to create and maintain a cohesive and productive team environment, build positive working relationships and work collaboratively with others.
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using office software, technology, and relevant computer applications.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to convey ideas clearly and persuasively.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises patient phlebotomy by prescribed technique outlined in the phlebotomy procedure manual.
  • Supervises all phlebotomy activities to include training, evaluation, and documentation of department staff. Provides orientation and training for staff to ensure comprehension of company policies and procedures.
  • Ensures specimen integrity by enforcing the laboratory’s procedures for collection, handling, and processing.
  • Maintains, implements, adheres to, and enforces departmental operating policies and procedures. Participates in continuing performance improvement to insure continuous improvement of services provided.
  • Interacts with patients relative to their age specific, physical, and psychosocial needs.
  • Makes inpatient/CTYU phlebotomy rounds, as scheduled.
  • Performs blood collection (venipuncture or fingerstick).
  • Answers questions and resolves problems pertaining to test requisitions.
  • Logs in specimens following standard operating procedures.
  • Files laboratory reports as per department protocol.
  • Maintains adequate inventory levels and rotates previous stock.
  • Keeps laboratory clean, neat, and organized, and assists in the maintenance of hardware.
  • Provides support to all areas when specimen transport and computer contact systems are down.
  • Attends appropriate orientation and training courses to maintain competency in job skills and knowledge.
  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.
