About The Position

Under the supervision of the Manager or Director, the Phlebotomy Supervisor provides clinical and technical supervision of staff Phlebotomists. The Phlebotomy Supervisor oversees the work of staff in performing routine and specialized blood drawing techniques on patients used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Areas of supervision include inpatient, outpatient, and Mobile Services phlebotomy (where applicable). The Supervisor serves as a communication link between medical staff, nursing, and the laboratory, collaborating with physicians, nurses, and other practitioners on special or difficult patient cases. The supervisor must be able to fulfill all duties of a Phlebotomist as needed.

Requirements

  • 3 years' medical laboratory experience required.
  • High school diploma/GED diploma or equivalent required.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree preferred.
  • 1 year prior supervisor experience preferred.
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
  • Supervises the work of phlebotomists.
  • Distributes work to staff based on assessment of operational needs.
  • Schedules staff to ensure adequate department coverage within budget constraints.
  • Implements department policies and procedures, plans, and objectives. Ensures that they are fully understood and properly interpreted by department employees.
  • Responsible for training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work; delivering regular performance feedback as well as annual performance appraisals; hiring, terminating, rewarding, and disciplining employees in consultation with Manager.
  • Evaluates collection equipment, techniques, and workflow patterns.
  • Works closely with the phlebotomy staff to ensure that pre- and post-analytical laboratory functions are coordinated with laboratory operations.
  • Interfaces with manager and employees to address complaints and resolve problems in accordance with the organization’s policies for inpatient, draw site, or mobile phlebotomy clients.
  • Keeps manager informed on department progress, problems, equipment status, and any significant factors affecting assigned responsibilities, objectives, and budget.
  • Maintains all necessary documentation concerning the operation of the department including statistics, employee records, and quality assurance logs to satisfy regulatory requirements.
  • Handle studies that come to the lab.
  • Work with lab billing staff to assure proper payment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the manager/director.
