About The Position

The Supervisor Patient Transport plans, coordinates, and monitors the daily activities in the department to provide effective and efficient service according to fluctuating workload demands and operational needs. This role involves producing staffing assignments and work schedules, coordinating employee activities, monitoring the TeleTracking System, regulating transport based on census, assisting in dispatching, approving schedule changes and vacation requests, maintaining attendance and productivity reports, and coordinating the purchase and maintenance of department equipment. The supervisor also selects, orients, develops, and evaluates associates, interviews candidates, schedules new employees, completes performance reviews, determines salary increases, processes corrective actions, processes payroll, maintains employee records, and develops standards for attire and performance. Additionally, the role provides effective quality service through quality assurance initiatives, conducts monthly meetings, supports and enforces policies, develops departmental policies, participates in bed management and patient safety teams, tracks quality assurance indicators, provides training, communicates with staff, patients, families, and the healthcare team, transports patients during staff shortages, provides information for budget preparation, responds to emergency codes, and participates in self-development through inservices and management training.

Requirements

  • High School education
  • This position will need to recognize needs and behaviors of patients treated, i.e. understand child growth and development, normal patterns of adolescent behavior and look for signs of normal aging; prior experience with various age groups in preferred.
  • 5-6 years hospital/ patient transportation including 1-2 years lead or supervisory experience
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to anticipate patient, employee and unit needs and refer for appropriate action.

  • Ability to read and write English
  • Ability to perform lifting/standing activities related to patients.
  • Ability to perform very heavy lifting (up to 100 pounds occasionally and /or excess of 50 pounds frequently and/or in excess of 20 pounds constantly.
  • Ability to maneuver and operate equipment used by the department.
  • Routinely works with potentially infectious specimens and patients.
  • Ability to assist in event of a fire or other disaster.
  • Work environment includes probability of exposure to adverse, hazardous or unpleasant conditions while caring for the sick.

Responsibilities

  • Produce staffing assignments and work schedules, maintains adequate staffing levels and coverage.
  • Coordinates employee activities throughout the day to ensure provision of services according to established procedures
  • Monitors accuracy and funcionality of the TeleTracking System including troubleshooting of the system, programming new parameters and assigning new user access.
  • Keeps abreast of high census areas and regulates transport accordingly
  • Assists in dispatching when short staffed or in times of large workload demands to ensure timeliness of service
  • Approves schedule changes and vacation requests.
  • Maintains attendance records.
  • Maintain departments productivity reports.
  • Coordinates the purchase and maintenance of equipment (wheelchairs and carts) used by the department to ensure availability and promptness of service.
  • Interviews employment candidates and selects the most appropriate person for hire
  • Schedules new employees for hospital orientation as well as department orientation.
  • Completes performance reviews of staff in a timely manner and establishes a development plan for each employee and motivates employees to attain established goals.
  • Determines salary increases
  • Process and documents corrective action, progressive disciplinary action, and termination of employees.
  • Process Report Express payroll.
  • Maintains employee records.
  • Develops standards for attire and performance.
  • Conducts monthly meetings to provide information and open communications.
  • Supports and enforces hospital and department policies and procedures
  • Develops and implements departmental policies and procedures.
  • Quality assurance- participates in bed management team to ensure timely transport of patients being discharged
  • Tracks Quality Assurance indicators and productivity and compiles productivity reports monthly.
  • Provides training based on identified needs
  • Participates in Patient Safety team to ensure proper patient Identification and Safety.
  • Interacts with staff throughout hospital
  • Communicates with nursing, etc, to discuss work-related issues. Attends any regular meetings or committees.
  • Communicates with patients and families and health care team in a competent, courteous and professional manner
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate appropriately with patients of various ages, i.e.: children, infants, adolescents' adults and geriatrics.
  • Transports patients during staff shortage in department. (Less than 5%)
  • Provides information (man power hours needed, equipment and supplies needed) to prepare budget and assist in developing goals in conjunction with Manager of Clinical Operations and CRU
  • Responds to emergency codes within the transport department.
  • Attends inservice programs on equipment use and operation
  • Attends all mandatory inservice programs and management training
