About The Position

The Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing dock operations and off-hours Customer Service. This role involves supervising and coordinating various aspects of dock operations and personnel, including load planning, local and line haul deliveries, equipment and contractor utilization, OS&D procedures, sales, rating, billing, customer service, employee payroll, and office operations. The supervisor is also tasked with maintaining a clean and safe work environment, assisting with service center and employee safety issues, and ensuring compliance with governmental regulations. They coordinate with local and line haul contractors on loading/unloading, equipment lease agreements, DOT qualifications, manifest approval, settlements, deliveries, and operational procedures. Key responsibilities include ensuring load quality, timely computer data entry, adherence to paperwork procedures, service center and freight security, and proper freight routing. The supervisor reviews daily service center operating costs to manage profitability and budget attainment, provides staff supervision through motivation, direction, performance review, and feedback, and offers leadership by example and knowledge sharing. They also trace and update freight information and paperwork and assist with various positions and forklift operations when employees are absent. The role operates with general guidance, independently, and within policy guidelines, using independent judgment. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or one to two years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Relies on written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employers of the organization.
  • Communicates internally with all corporate office staff, and externally with service centers, linehaul contractors, law enforcement and customers.
  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
  • Experience supervising the selection, training, development, and appraisal of personnel.
  • Average typing, filing and ten key skills.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Hazardous Materials Handling Certified.
  • Forklift certified.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and delegate assignments.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred knowledge of AS/400.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures load quality, timely computer data entry, and paperwork procedures followed, service center and freight security, and proper freight routing.
  • Reviews daily service center operating cost to manage service center profitability and budgeted cost attainment.
  • Provides supervision to staff through motivation, direction, review of, and feedback on performance.
  • Participates in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
  • Provides leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge.
  • Traces and updates freight information and paperwork.
  • Assists with various positions and forklift operations in the absence of employees.
  • Receives very general guidance with respect to overall objectives; work is usually quite independent of others; operates within division or department policy guidelines using independent judgment in achieving assigned objectives.
