About The Position

Traffic Control & Engineering is responsible for the administration, engineering, and operations related to the installation, manufacturing, maintenance, and removal of signs, flexible bollards, moveable barriers, in-house traffic sign production, and other traffic control devices. This office utilizes the expertise of engineers, sign designers, planners, inspectors, IT experts, and analysts to achieve agency goals. This supervisory position will oversee the installation and maintenance of vertical elements, bus stop infrastructure, and regulatory and informational signage along priority bus corridors in New York City. The selected candidate will supervise Traffic Device Maintainers, ensuring the successful implementation of bus priority improvements to enhance bus speed, reliability, accessibility, and the rider experience. The role involves overseeing the preparation, installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control devices, including vertical elements, traffic signs, structures, and their supports. Responsibilities include supervising and training staff in warehousing, production, installation, repair, and maintenance. Administrative duties include managing inventory, absence control, staff performance evaluations, and operational procedure improvements. The supervisor will also maintain the physical upkeep of work locations and warehouse areas, enforce safety rules and regulations, and promote the correct usage of safety equipment. Field observations, audits, daily work assignment coordination, closing out completed work, personnel management, operating a motor vehicle, and participating in strategic meetings are also part of the role. The candidate is expected to lead collaboratively and inclusively, fostering professional development, building a strong team, and communicating effectively with all stakeholders. Requirements

  • Must be reachable on DOT's promotion list.
  • At least two years of experience as a Traffic Device Maintainer working for the NYC Department of Transportation; or
  • Three years of recent, satisfactory, full-time experience maintaining, servicing and repairing mechanical equipment or experience of a nature similar to the duties described above, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • Possess a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York at the time of appointment and maintain it for the duration of employment.
  • For appointment to certain positions, a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) valid in the State of New York, with no restrictions, is required and must be maintained for the duration of employment.
  • Candidates will be examined to determine whether they can perform the essential functions of the position of Traffic Device Maintainer.
  • Must pass a drug screening.
  • New hires must reside in NYC for the first two years of employment.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word, with strong overall computer skills.
  • Experience supervising staff.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in utilizing the Department of Transportation’s Sign Information Management System (SIMS).
