About The Position

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Supervisor of Special Education, within the Office of Special Education. This role involves management and coaching of instructional staff, leadership in curriculum, instruction, and assessment, and organizational leadership to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations and promote student academic achievement.

Requirements

  • An appropriate New Jersey Department of Education Standard Certificate as deemed necessary.
  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful experience in school or District level administration.
  • Minimum of four (4) years successful experience in teaching special education or providing related services within a special education or intervention program.
  • Knowledge of New Jersey Student Learning Standards for curriculum, assessment and instruction.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of subject specialty and effective teaching methods.
  • Ability to plan, organize and administer a District-level professional development program.
  • Ability to maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of New Jersey Administrative Code Title 6A Chapter 14.
  • Knowledge of special education placement, compliance, and EasyIEP or other electronic database that stores Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
  • Ability to complete comprehensive special education reviews, including recommendations for programmatic improvement and compliance management.

Responsibilities

  • Observes, coaches, and evaluates special education staff, and provides ongoing professional development for targeted improvement in identified growth areas.
  • Provides constructive feedback to Principals, Vice Principals, Department Chairs and CST members on the improvement of student achievement and effective implementation of strategies and recommendations to improve special education programming.
  • Monitors all Teach NJ Educator Effectiveness activities (IPDP/CAP, observations, and evaluations) Special Education staff members.
  • Monitor student progress and program effectiveness.
  • Assumes the orientation and mentor responsibilities of all novice Special Education Staff.
  • Collaborate with parents, school administrators, and external agencies.
  • Synthesizes all Special Education achievement quarterly reports from Special Education and provides a comprehensive review and presentation at various forums throughout the school year.
  • Serves as a lead in the area of Special Education.
  • Participate in district-level planning and policy development.
  • Supports District's textbook adoption committee and process ensuring all curricular resources and supplements are fully vetted; meeting state standards and the diverse needs of all students.
  • Supports in the development of a comprehensive strategy to guarantee an accurate inventory and timely distribution of all resources.
  • Supports in the development of all Special Education diagnostics, interim assessments, district assessments, mid-term and final exams.
  • Collaborates with the Supervisors of Bilingual and ESL services, and the Special Assistants of Special Education to ensure curriculum guides, units of study, resources, and assessments are tailored for all learners.
  • Collaborates with all District Directors and Supervisors to ensure curriculum guides, units of study, resources, and assessments are aligned to state standards and result in interdisciplinary opportunities.
  • Establishes and executes organizational systems and strategies to monitor district goals.
  • Develops and monitors strategies for high level collaboration among faculty and staff.
  • Communicates effectively and maintains a positive disposition in all circumstances to ensure an outcome that promotes student academic achievement, staff professional development, and District-wide success.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director or Special Education or Assistant Superintendent of Student Support.
  • Oversees the planning, implementation, and evaluation of special education programs to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.
