About The Position

The Supervisor of Operating Room is a full-time position responsible for overseeing the team that manages 19 operating rooms, which are open 24/7. This role works alongside a PM shift supervisor, with hours varying from 6 am to 5 pm. The position involves monitoring and assessing operating room resources, coordinating schedules, managing employee assignments, and assisting with budget development. The supervisor also serves as a clinical resource, a liaison between medical and nursing staff, and evaluates the quality of patient care. This role requires ensuring compliance with policies and procedures, providing direct patient care, and performing human resources responsibilities for staff, including coaching, performance reviews, and recommendations for hiring and terminations. The incumbent must understand and adhere to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the team member practices.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Typically requires 3 years of experience in nursing within an operating room or surgical services.
  • Advanced clinical and technical knowledge of the surgery, endoscopy, and pre-operative and post-operative areas.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple demands simultaneously.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach above shoulders and twist frequently during work shift.
  • Will be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, radiation, blood and body fluid hazards on a continuous basis.
  • Required to wear gloves, goggles, and gowns on an as-needed basis.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors and assesses operating room resources (personnel, equipment, and rooms) to efficiently orchestrate the correct set-up for surgical procedures.
  • Communicates with patient care units regarding changes/openings in schedule.
  • Coordinates operating room resources to accommodate unscheduled and emergency surgical procedures.
  • Responsible for expediting the surgery schedule for both elective and non-elective procedures.
  • Monitors employee assignments; maintains staff scheduling, evaluates staffing levels, and makes adjustments as necessary to maintain productivity.
  • Assists the manager in developing annual site capital and operational budgets and works within established budgets.
  • Promotes communication and serves as a clinical resource for patients, families, hospital departments, and medical staff.
  • Coordinates the needs of physicians and acts as a liaison between the medical staff and nursing staff.
  • Evaluates the quality of patient care provided through collaboration with unit and organization resource people.
  • Assures policies and procedures are in compliance with the medical center, nursing department, and regulatory agencies.
  • Provides direct patient care by performing the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation).
  • Performs human resources responsibilities for staff, including coaching on performance, completing performance reviews, and managing staff morale.
  • Recommends hiring, compensation changes, promotions, corrective action decisions, and terminations.
  • Responsible for understanding and adhering to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and ensuring compliance with applicable policies, regulations, and laws.
