About The Position

The Supervisor of Safety - Landfill Operations provides day-to-day field safety support for Apex Landfill in Amsterdam, Ohio. Reporting to the Manager of Safety - Landfill Operations, this role works closely with Operations to monitor activities across the working face, tipping areas, haul roads, heavy mobile equipment, rail-served operations, maintenance, contractors, and support functions. The Supervisor reinforces IWS safety programs, identifies and corrects hazards, conducts training and investigations, maintains required documentation, and helps ensure safe and compliant landfill operations.

Requirements

  • 1-2 years of health and safety or transportation compliance experience, preferably in a field-based operational role.
  • Experience in solid waste, landfill, construction, mining, or another heavy industrial environment is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of applicable OSHA and DOT/FMCSA requirements and the ability to learn relevant Ohio, local, and IWS requirements.
  • General familiarity with Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) and Jefferson County General Health District (JCGHD) requirements and inspection practices is preferred, particularly as they relate to landfill operations, safe work practices, and environmental protection.
  • Experience conducting field observations, safety audits, training, incident investigations, and corrective-action follow-up.
  • Practical understanding of heavy equipment and pedestrian interaction, traffic controls, PPE, lockout/tagout, hazard communication, and other common landfill hazards.
  • Good analytical, organizational, documentation, and time-management skills in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Strong communication and coaching skills, with the ability to partner effectively with frontline employees, supervisors, contractors, drivers, and visitors.
  • Solid computer skills, including Microsoft Office and safety applications, and the ability to work routinely outdoors in an active landfill environment.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates a commitment to communicating, improving, and applying safety policies throughout Apex Landfill.
  • Promotes a positive safety culture through visible field leadership and personal example.
  • Maintains regular field presence across the working face, tipping areas, haul roads, heavy mobile equipment operations, scalehouse, maintenance areas, rail-served activities, and landfill gas and leachate support work.
  • Conducts daily safety observations, job-site assessments, and facility audits; documents findings and verify that corrective actions are completed.
  • Partners with Safety Manager to monitor controls for heavy equipment and pedestrian interaction, backing and spotting, site traffic, dumping and tipping, work near slopes or edges, and other high-risk landfill activities.
  • Verifies that job safety, standard operating procedures, permits, PPE, and hazard controls are appropriate, understood, available, and used before work proceeds.
  • Delivers or supports new-hire orientation, safety meetings, stand-downs, and task-specific or trainings delegated by Safety Manager
  • Investigate injuries, vehicle or equipment events, property damage, spills, near misses, and safety concerns; gather evidence and prepare timely, accurate reports.
  • Assists with employee injury response, including tele-nurse use, clinic or emergency care, required notifications, and follow-up directed by the Safety Manager.
  • Inspects PPE, emergency equipment, signage, housekeeping, and other safeguards, and tracks open corrective actions through completion.
  • Supports contractor, vendor, driver, and visitor orientation and compliance, and participates in emergency drills and other site preparedness activities.
  • Collects safety observations and performance data, communicates trends and urgent concerns to the Safety Manager and Operations, and supports special projects.
