Reporting to the Assistant Director of Human Resources, the Supervisor Health, Safety and Wellness is responsible for coordinating and supervising the day-to-day delivery of the County’s established Health, Safety and Wellness Programme and strategy. This position provides day-to-day supervision and guidance to support effective operations within these functional areas. The role applies well-developed health and safety, disability management and wellness programming knowledge and experience to ensure consistent application of policies, procedures, collective agreement, and applicable legislation.

Requirements

  • Three-year degree in Human Resources or a related field.
  • A Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation, Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) or Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) designation is required.
  • Minimum five years of experience or equivalent in a municipal unionized setting with a focus on health and safety.
  • Experience in facilitating and communicating with the Ministry of Labour and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.
  • Experience preparing and delivering presentations to both internal and external customers.
  • Experience with learning management systems (LMS).
  • Experience with Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS).
  • Thorough working knowledge of all relevant legislation including, but not limited to, Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Human Rights Code and Employment Standards Act.
  • A valid driver’s licence (minimum G2 Class) and access to a reliable vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • Ontario Municipal Management Institute Certified Municipal Manager designation is an asset.
  • Supervisory experience is an asset.
  • SAP SuccessFactors experience an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a team of five employees, including the Disability Management Coordinators, Health and Safety Specialists and Health and Safety Trainer, providing day-to-day direction, workload coordination, employee development, performance accountability, and effective service delivery.
  • Provide information to support budget planning and resource allocation for disability management, health, safety and wellness, and health and safety training activities, as required.
  • Responsible for managing the procurement and contract management for budgetary items relating to portfolio as well as monitoring budget regularly.
  • Supervise the Disability Management Coordinator position in support of disability-related absences, claims related to Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB), Short-term Disability and Long-term Disability, return-to-work and modified work arrangements.
  • Provide input on programmes to minimize or reduce the costs associated with disability claims management by overseeing early intervention strategies.
  • Provide close guidance and monitoring of complex cases in disability-related absences, return-to-work, and modified work.
  • Coordinate the County’s response to requests for temporary and permanent accommodations in response to medical restrictions and limitations.
  • Supervise the development, implementation and maintenance of the Corporate Health and Safety programme ensuring a “best practices” approach and compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Assist with labour relations matters in relation to Health and Safety and Disability Management, under the direction of the Director of HR or delegate.
  • Make recommendations for new policies or policy updates that may be required in relation to Health and Safety and Disability Management.
  • Act as liaison with Union Representatives and Management on items related to safety and disability management.
