About The Position

Working directly with the Director of Horticulture & Grounds (DHG), the Supervisor of Grounds Maintenance (SGM) oversees turf, irrigation, equipment maintenance, Christmas lights and snow removal. The SGM leads and supervises maintenance and landscape crews who mow lawns, irrigate planting beds and perform other outdoor maintenance tasks. They must possess the ability to interact with staff (at all levels) in a fast-paced environment, sometimes under pressure, remaining pleasant, flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient, with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. Expert level written and verbal communication skills, strong decision-making ability and attention to detail are equally important, and they must work independently with little or no supervision. This position will allow one to impact others through a service mindset centered on making an eternal difference.   • They must have the ability to safely utilize dangerous power and hand equipment including heavy excavation equipment.
  • Reliable transportation, current driver’s license with good driving record.
  • Have basic skills with computers, preferred experience with building management systems.
  • Availability to work any combination of days and shifts during park operations including Saturdays and Sundays, being able to be called in after hours with an emergency.
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Word and Excel and basic computer operation

Nice To Haves

  • Grounds Maintenance degree preferred
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in horticulture industry
  • Knowledge of aquatics and large pond maintenance is preferred
  • Some construction, masonry, natural stone and hardscape experience preferred
  • Experience in staff supervision
  • Extensive plant knowledge

Responsibilities

  • Promote the mission and standards of Answers in Genesis.
  • Create a SERVE culture environment in all work done.
  • Approach all tasks with a second mile mindset.
  • Prioritize personal integrity in all interactions and assignments.
  • Receive instructions and work assignments from the DHG along with coordinating and setting schedules for grounds maintenance crews and volunteer groups.
  • Oversee maintenance of hard and soft surfaces including blacktop and gravel yards, grass and irrigation systems, snow plowing, vehicle maintenance and upkeep, operating and training of wheeled equipment (trucks, mowers, snow plowing equipment), assisting with overseeing contractor work and coordinating set up for special events.
  • Oversee and perform seasonal grounds duties including, raking, planting, watering, mowing, cleanup debris/trash, weed whip fence lines, weed rock/mulch beds, snow plowing.
  • Maintain the highest standard of ground cleanliness, including street sweeping and maintenance of parking lots, lakes, benches, and sidewalks.
  • Regularly clean up trash in ditches, roadsides, parking lots and landscaped areas.
  • Ensure daily maintenance and upkeep of equipment and tools is performed.
  • Ensure all fleet equipment is for safe operation and provide proper training to the team, road graders, backhoe, auger truck, dump truck, tree spade, skid steer, street sweepers, mowers and snowplows.
  • Assist other groundskeepers and volunteers in accomplishment of routine assignments and problem solving.
  • Keep parking lot, walks and driveways/tram road clear of debris and litter.
  • Use mowers to cut turf areas; perform minor repair and adjustments of equipment.
  • Maintain lake gardens, including the lake itself.
  • Maintain proper records of all the aforementioned items.
  • Fertilize, irrigate and care for all turf areas.
  • Trim trees, hedges, and shrubs; prepare and treat soil for planting annual color.
  • Assist in keeping turf in balance with regards to insect and disease problems, seasonal mulching and dyeing of garden areas, fall leaf removal.
  • Install drain tiles.
  • Operate small and medium-sized trucks and trailers.
  • Operate power equipment such as bobcat, tractor, mowers, chainsaws, weed eater, blowers etc., operate hand tools such as pruners hand saw, hammer, shovels, rakes, pitch forks etc.
  • Perform snow removal duties which may require unusual hours.
  • Follow standard operating procedures for all tasks.
  • Assist with Christmas light display.
  • Assist with Horticulture and Site Development teams as needed.
  • Install, operate and maintain the grounds irrigation system in conjunction with the DHG for plant beds
  • Maintain off-site properties
  • Is a “hands on” participant
  • Manage grounds and project crews and maintain personnel records
  • Assist in assignments for volunteers
  • Work on special projects as assigned
  • And all other duties and responsibilities assigned by management.
