About The Position

Provide clinical and administrative management of the North Eastern Medical Genetics Program (NEO-MGP) and administrative management of the Northern Regional Genetics Program (NRGP). Plan, develop, disseminate, implement, and evaluate activities with the Manager to achieve the objectives of the NEO-MGP and NRGP based on patient needs and provincial guidelines in accordance with HSN and NECC’s strategic plans.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science from an accredited university.
  • Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

Nice To Haves

  • A Master’s Degree in Genetic Counselling is preferred.
  • Five (5) years’ experience working in clinical genetics is preferred.
  • Two (2) years’ working in a leadership/supervisory role within a health care environment is preferred.
  • Training or recent experience with clinical process development is preferred.
  • Demonstrated superior knowledge of Human Genetics as it applies to Medical Genetics is preferred.
  • Demonstrated superior knowledge of ethical issues related to Medical Genetics is preferred.
  • Demonstrated superior leadership, problem-solving, critical thinking, organizational, and human resources management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, advise and teach others using the principles of adult learning.
  • Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation and principles of management, hospital committee structure, conflict management and resolution, system needs analysis and organizational assessment.
  • Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with patients, health care providers and employees.
  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Manager, create and implement annual program goals/objectives that align with HSN’s Strategic Plan, the Regional Cancer Plan, the Ontario Cancer Plan and the work of the Ontario Health Provincial Genetics Program.
  • Oversee operational plans for the NEO-MGP activities, goals, and objectives; provide contingency and adjustment plans.
  • Participate, contribute and provide leadership on local, regional and provincial committees/working groups to support medical genetics representation and advocacy for the North East Region.
  • Lead and direct the planning and organization of day-to-day departmental operations to ensure adequate and consistent service; determine and assess workflow and make adjustments as required.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Advisor (i.e. Medical Geneticist) to determine service delivery needs and standards; ensure human and material resources are in place for the region.
  • Lead and direct a plan to ensure execution of in-person and virtual medical geneticist clinics.
  • Act as a primary liaison with HSN genomics laboratory.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with key industry experts, academic institutions, and research organizations to enhance the program’s reputation and promote collaborative research efforts.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with referring physicians, ensuring effective communication and collaboration for optimal patient care and outcomes.
  • Assist with the development of the annual budget and assume fiscal accountability of the departmental operation according to approved budget.
  • Ensure service delivery is in accordance with evidence, best practices, policies, and delegated responsibilities.
  • Develop, implement, formulate, and maintain processes and plans to ensure patient/client/consumer satisfaction, safety, and privacy in the NEO-MGP.
  • Ensure the content and standards of educational and promotional material developed and disseminated by the NEO-MGP is factual and evidence-based.
  • In collaboration with the Manager, manage human resources which include: recruitment, selection and training; performance, attendance, health and safety, and quality of work life.
  • Guide, motivate, monitor and supervise staff, develop standards of performance, evaluate performance and make recommendations on disciplinary action as required.
  • Oversee the work of others in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations, and HSN policies.
  • Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  • Participate in the accreditation process and work to ensure that the program and HSN achieve, maintain and continually improve upon their accredited status.
  • Teach, coach and lead staff in the development and monitoring of quality indicators and improvement initiatives.
  • Engage in and foster professional development of all staff and provide opportunities for learning within budgeted resources.
  • Ensure a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors; investigate report, debrief and take or direct corrective action as required on incidents.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders/organizations/community groups to achieve program objectives, integrate and link services and foster partnerships across the continuum of service delivery.
  • Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  • Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.
