About The Position

Reporting to the Director of Public Works, using department garage space, tools and equipment, this role leads, assists, and directs the activities of automotive/equipment mechanics in carrying out maintenance, tune-up, and repairs to heavy diesel and gasoline powered equipment like trucks, graders, backhoes, front end loaders, rollers, sweepers, and the like for the Department of Public Works, and of other town departments as time and priorities permit.

Requirements

High School plus 5 years formal schooling in diesel, gasoline, and hydraulic systems
Knowledge of electric and electronic systems
CDL Class A Driver's license
Hydraulics license to cover operation of front-end loaders and backhoe

Responsibilities

Repairs and rebuilds small and large diesel and gasoline engines; hydraulic systems, pneumatic and hydraulic brake systems; transmissions; and front and rear end assemblies.
Supervises two other mechanics daily, and up to five during winter storms and other emergencies.
Repairs and maintains all types of vehicle electrical and electronic systems; installs and maintains two-way radio equipment.
Repairs and maintains sanding and snow removal equipment, including mounting plows and welding plow frames.
Performs body work, including painting, and fabricates parts for welding on equipment.
Installs new and repairs tires and tubes for all department vehicles.
Schedules and maintains all town vehicles, keeping records of all work performed on vehicles and providing billing to town departments.
Purchases and maintains a cost-effective inventory of new and used parts, tires, equipment, and tools.
Functions independently within established department policies and procedures; unusual problems are reviewed first with the Director of Public Works.
Stays current on all new equipment and attends classes, seminars, and lectures on new products and equipment.
Performs other duties of a similar nature and complexity as directed.
