About The Position

The Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) Maintenance Supervisor directs electromechanics performing repair, maintenance, and storage of light rail vehicles and related equipment. This role oversees contract staff responsible for vehicle cleaning and ensures the quality and documentation of all maintenance activities, coordinating with adjoining shifts and other shops to support safe and reliable LRV operations.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the tools, equipment, diagnostic systems, and supplies used in light rail vehicle repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to understand and apply agency regulations and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate the work of maintenance staff, implement procedures, rules, and regulations, and instruct employees on proper methods and techniques for light rail vehicle repair and maintenance.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for conveying technical information, providing feedback, and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to collect operational and maintenance data, prepare clear reports, and contribute to budget development and monitoring for the LRV maintenance unit.
  • Ability to analyze maintenance data, inspection results, and fault histories to identify trends, prioritize corrective actions, and optimize light rail vehicle reliability.
  • Proficiency in applying rail vehicle safety standards and regulatory requirements to maintenance practices, inspections, and operating readiness decisions.
  • Skill in planning and scheduling maintenance activities to balance vehicle availability, workforce capacity, and service requirements.
  • Ability to train and develop maintenance staff in diagnostic techniques, proper use of tools and equipment, and adherence to standard operating procedures.
  • Minimum of (3) three years of related professional experience in electromechanical maintenance; minimum of (1) one year of leadership experience

Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs, and oversees daily operations of the LRV maintenance unit, ensuring a sufficient number of light rail vehicles are safe, clean, and ready for service.
  • Implements preventive maintenance programs, including parts and equipment replacement, subassembly repairs, and overhauls, and provides technical guidance on complex maintenance issues.
  • Maintains unit safety standards and instructs employees on safe work methods and techniques.
  • Provides information, instructions, and counseling to employees to ensure adherence to safety, operational, maintenance, and administrative procedures, rulebooks, and guidelines.
  • Inspects light rail vehicles and peripheral equipment to verify proper maintenance, safe operating condition, and overall cleanliness.
  • Orders parts and supplies, prepares required reports, and conducts first-level grievance hearings.
  • Interacts with vendors providing materials and services to the agency.
  • Ensures vendors comply with agency specifications and requirements.
  • Monitors and conducts quality assurance audits and inspections of light rail vehicle cleaning contractors and other contracted services.
  • Meets with agency management to discuss and resolve issues related to vehicle scheduling, maintenance activities, and other departmental matters.
  • Maintains documentation of maintenance work and quality assurance activities.
  • Supports completion of departmental goals and tasks, including occasional travel as required.
  • Fosters and maintains a healthy work environment that is safety focused, collaborative, professional, and conducive to high morale, inclusivity, productivity, and effectiveness.
  • Provides coverage for other shift supervisors or the Assistant Superintendent as required to ensure continuity of operations.
