About The Position

Halton Region is seeking a Supervisor, Laboratory Operations to lead the Region’s licensed and accredited environmental laboratory operations. This role is crucial for supporting Public Works departmental operations, ensuring compliance, and protecting public health and the environment. The Region is investing significantly in infrastructure over the next decade and is looking for dedicated individuals to join the Public Works team. This position reports to the Manager, Integrated Management Systems & Quality Assurance (IMSQA).

Requirements

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive laboratory experience, including supervisory experience.
  • Proven leadership skills to build and motivate technical staff.
  • Post-secondary degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of water, wastewater and biosolids matrices with experience in microbiology preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory quality management systems (ISO/IEC 17025), quality programs and auditing methods.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental laboratory practices, analytical methods, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and data systems.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to build and maintain positive relationships with staff, internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, operational and regulated environment.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act with a demonstrated commitment to safe laboratory practices.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, supervision, staff development and performance management to a team of 14 technical professionals emphasizing a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and teamwork.
  • Deliver laboratory services to meet operational and regulatory requirements through accurate, reliable and timely analytical reporting to clients and regulators.
  • Ensure laboratory operations comply with provincial and federal legislative requirements (including the Occupational Health and Safety act, Safe Drinking Water Act and Human Pathogens and Toxins Act and associated regulations) as well as alignment with governing laboratory industry standards.
  • Serve as the Licence Holder Representative and Biological Safety Officer, to maintain and continually improve the laboratory’s biosafety program.
  • Continually improve the Laboratory Quality Management System (QMS) and ensure adequate QA/QC programs to maintain third-party accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 and to meet licensing requirements.
  • Ensure the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) maintains the validity, accuracy, and traceability of analytical data.
  • Plan, manage and track laboratory budgets, equipment and resources.
  • Monitor laboratory performance metrics and implement corrective actions where required to ensure laboratory operations are safe, efficient, and reliable.
  • Maintain strong relationships with clients and regulators through open, proactive, and collaborative communication.
  • Participate in emergency response and after-hours call-out as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
