About The Position

The UNM Department of Dental is seeking a highly motivated individual to work as a Supervisor Dental Assistant. This role performs and/or oversees a variety of associated administrative, staff support, and dental assisting activities, some of which require advanced or specialized knowledge and skills. The position assists in the performance of dental and radiography procedures, prepares and maintains dental equipment and supplies, and assists in the coordination of day-to-day patient administration, records management, and back office support activities. The Supervisor Dental Assistant also trains and oversees lower graded staff and/or students.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Dental Assistant certificate from an accredited program
  • 5 years of directly related experience
  • Current Certified State of New Mexico radiology license required
  • Verification of education and licensure will be required if selected for hire.

  • Completed degree from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Creates and oversees daily dental assistant schedule, and patient schedules to identify and correct clinic coverage needs and patient flow.
  • Adjusts assignments on a daily basis when staff changes occur.
  • Provides orientation, training, and backup support to clinic dental assistants and students to ensure consistency regarding clinic operations, clinical competencies, and provider support.
  • Supervises Dental Assistants, including hiring, performance management, and daily work for CDS, ASC and Novitski.
  • Collaborates with Practice Manager to ensure clinic standards are upheld for monthly Infection Control reviews and other national accreditations.
  • Provides administrative/clerical services such as data collection, scheduling appointments, verifying medical coverage, and telephone / cashiering duties.
  • Ensures clinic supplies are ordered and stocked appropriately.
  • Maintains clinic logs, reports, safety checks, and equipment records.
  • Conducts initial screening of patient, collects patient data and takes medical histories; enters data into computer, verifies accuracy of data, makes corrections when necessary.
  • Promptly reports abnormal data to appropriate personnel.
  • Provides chairside assistance to dentists and/or dental hygienists in the performance of dental procedures, to include operative, preventive, periodontal, endodontic, prosthetic, surgical, implant, and anesthesia procedures in both the general dental office setting and hospital operating room.
  • Prepares, sterilizes, organizes, and sets up dental equipment, ensures that all dental instruments are cleaned, dated, and processed according to established clinic guidelines and standards.
  • Maintains compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, infection control techniques and regulations by reviewing dental material safety data sheets, statistics, labeling hazardous material, disposing of sharp and infectious waste, and maintaining autoclave sterilization log.
  • Develops and processes dental radiographs in accordance with provider orders; assists in the monitoring and maintenance of radiation safety procedures and protocols with both digital and traditional methods.
  • Maintains dental laboratory slips and checks in lab cases.
  • Maintains and assists with computerized data and charting, probing, and digital x-rays.
