About The Position

Reporting to the Technical Manager, the Laboratory Technical Supervisor is responsible for the efficient, timely, cost effective, and high-quality service at the following locations: Blood Collection (Dartmouth General, Dartmouth Drive Thru, Woodlawn, Nova Scotia Hospital, Belmont), Dartmouth General Clinical Laboratory which includes Chemistry and Hematology, Transfusion Medicine, POCT, Anatomical Pathology and other testing referrals to the QEII. In collaboration with the Technical Manager and Service Chiefs the Technical Supervisor ensures the provision of rapid, accurate test results to healthcare providers by effectively deploying and supporting the technical and administrative staff. They also ensure that equipment and precision instruments used in the division are properly serviced and maintained, and that there are sufficient and appropriate materials available for the performance of tests. High standards of technical and safety procedures are maintained through constant evaluation and monitoring. The role supports and coordinates recruitment, training, performance evaluations and management, and coordinates the availability of resources for implementation and ongoing evaluation of approved new tests, procedures, and equipment. The Technical Supervisor consults with, collaborates, and responds to patients, healthcare providers, hospitals, nursing units and other internal and external clients regarding delivery of services. They inform decisions about the most efficient use of financial, human and material resources while meeting operational needs and working within the appropriate policies and financial budgets. The role participates in short- and long-term planning for area(s) of responsibility, including planning for new, revised or expanded service. They make objective and respectful decisions consistent with policies, standards and objectives of the laboratory in an environment that involves consideration of patient safety, future needs of the organization and best use of human and material resources. Demonstrates good stewardship in the identification, reporting & mitigation of unsafe Acts or conditions.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved program in Medical Laboratory Science or MSc. in discipline
  • Must be licensed with NSRMLS
  • Certification with CSMLS is required
  • Medical Laboratory Technologist with four (4) years progressively more responsible experience in a laboratory
  • Completion of a management program or commitment to successfully complete a management program in three years and/or a combination of education, training and progressively more responsible experience
  • Demonstrates leadership capabilities
  • Excellent organization and decision-making skills
  • Effective and respectful communication and interpersonal skills are essential
  • Knowledge of management systems and accreditation requirements

Nice To Haves

  • Previous management experience and direct supervision of staff and/or multiple departments in a laboratory setting is strongly preferred
  • Technical expertise in multiple disciplines/services an asset
  • Advanced computer skills and knowledge of Cerner Laboratory Information System (LIS) as related to the function of the section(s) is preferred
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
