About The Position

Position Overview: Parsons is now hiring a Supervising Structural Engineer to join our water/wastewater group in the Los Angeles area, having responsible experience in providing structural engineering design and construction support services on wastewater treatment plant facilities in Los Angeles, CA. The Supervising Structural Engineer must be a licensed civil or structural engineer able to provide structural engineering design services at a Client’s office located in Playa Del Rey, CA, adjacent to the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Skills/Competencies Proven ability to perform in a supervisory capacity, excellent written and oral communications skills, and a thorough knowledge of industry practices and regulations are required. Must also possess a thorough knowledge of current technology and be able to select and apply appropriate engineering software for use on projects.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education: Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering – Specialized in Structural Engineering
  • Licensed Civil Engineer in the State of California
  • A minimum of 12 years of demonstrated experience in structural engineering associated with design of water/wastewater treatment plant facilities, including headworks, treatment process structures, building structures, pumping stations, chemical storage facilities, above-ground pipeline and utility support structures, etc.
  • Good knowledge of the wastewater treatment environment and the nature of design related thereto.
  • Good knowledge of the wastewater treatment environment and the nature of construction related thereto.
  • Ability to commute and work full-time at client’s offices in Playa Del Rey, CA, adjacent to LAX.
  • Ability to conduct field inspection and investigation of aluminum, steel, and concrete structures to prepare design calculations or technical reports that include analysis of problems and recommended solutions.
  • Experience with analyzing and solving structural problems caused by the marine environment and galvanic reaction.
  • Knowledgeable with construction material and methodology used to mitigate the corrosive and marine environment at wastewater treatment plants. For example: Grades of stainless steel Galvanized steel and galvanization Aluminum and related coating Fiberglass and PVC Polyethylene and T-Lock concrete lining Cathodic protection Surface preparation and coating
  • Working knowledge of various processes such as: headworks, primary clarifiers, aeration basins, secondary clarifiers, disinfection processes, anaerobic digestion, reverse osmosis, membrane bioreactors, solids dewatering and other membrane processes.
  • Knowledge and applications of industry codes and standards such as the latest Los Angeles Building Code (LABC), International Building Code (IBC), California Building Code (CBC), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), American Concrete Institute (ACI), OSHA etc.
  • Ability to conduct independent field investigations and collect field data to support design work.
  • Ability to write specifications.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and develop solutions to overcome problems.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
  • Excellent team player working with other design disciplines.
  • Aggressive and a self-starter.
  • Good understanding of safety issues including Cal OSHA regulations.
  • Possession of an ENV SP certification or ability to obtain an ENV SP certification within two (2) months of being hired.

Nice To Haves

  • Licensed Structural Engineer in the State of California is highly desirable
  • Familiarity in working within a municipal government organization is desired.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Revit.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of work functions related structural engineering, supporting design and construction of various wastewater treatment plant facilities in Los Angeles.
  • Prepare structural engineering analyses, calculations, design drawings and specifications.
  • Review construction documents including plans and specifications; interpret plans and specifications for construction work performed by contractors; ensure contractual compliance with plans, specifications, codes, and safety requirements.
