About The Position

The Supervising Psychiatrist / Psychiatric Medical Director provides psychiatric leadership, direct clinical care, and physician supervision across Southeastern Integrated Care (SEIC). The position carries forward the core functions previously performed by Dr. Lunsford King, including supervision and collaboration for approximately five psychiatric nurse practitioners, psychiatric evaluations and consultation as needed, Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) psychiatric oversight and direct participation, medical oversight of office-based buprenorphine treatment delivered through qualified nurse practitioners at the CRCI Shallotte office, psychiatric and medication-management oversight of the Ron Barnes Center for Recovery residential program and its approved formulary, and collaboration with SEIC family medicine and primary care nurse practitioners to advance fully integrated behavioral and physical health care. Services may be delivered through a combination of in-person and telehealth modalities when clinically appropriate and legally permissible; ACT responsibilities require the direct and community-based participation specified by NC Medicaid Clinical Coverage Policy 8A-1 and the applicable NC ACT fidelity model.

Requirements

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree and successful completion of an accredited residency training program in psychiatry.
• Must be board eligible or board certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or an equivalent recognized board; board certification is preferred and required when specified by contract or program policy.
• Must hold and maintain an active, unrestricted license to practice medicine in North Carolina and meet applicable qualification and credentialing requirements, including 10A NCAC 27G .0104.
• Must hold and maintain an unrestricted DEA registration with authority appropriate to assigned prescribing duties, complete all required controlled-substance registrations and training, and maintain a valid driver’s license and automobile insurance for required community-based duties.
• Eligible for enrollment, credentialing, and recredentialing with NC Medicaid, Medicare, commercial payers, managed care entities, hospitals, and SEIC programs as applicable.
• For ACT assignment, must satisfy the psychiatrist qualifications and perform the psychiatrist functions specified in NC Medicaid Clinical Coverage Policy 8A-1, including required direct and community-based services.
• Experience with buprenorphine and other medications for opioid use disorder is required or must be obtained before assuming MOUD oversight duties.
• Must maintain professional liability coverage and all continuing education required for medical licensure, board status, controlled-substance prescribing, and assigned clinical functions.

Responsibilities

• Conduct psychiatric evaluations, diagnostic assessments, medication-management visits, risk and capacity assessments, and urgent psychiatric consultations as clinically indicated across SEIC programs.
• Provide clinical leadership for evidence-based treatment of serious mental illness, co-occurring substance use disorders, trauma-related conditions, and other behavioral health conditions, including medication selection, monitoring, management of adverse effects, and deprescribing when appropriate.
• Order and review laboratory testing and other diagnostic studies associated with psychiatric and substance-use treatment; respond timely to abnormal results and document follow-up actions.
• Provide psychiatric back-up and consultation after hours and on weekends through an organized coverage arrangement for assigned programs.
• Provide physician supervision, consultation, and clinical oversight for approximately five psychiatric nurse practitioners and any assigned physician assistants in accordance with North Carolina Medical Board, North Carolina Board of Nursing, prescribing, credentialing, payer, and SEIC requirements.
• Enter into and maintain all required collaborative practice or supervisory agreements; define practice parameters; remain available for consultation as required; and complete required chart review, quality review, and performance-evaluation activities.
• Provide education, coaching, and case-based consultation to psychiatric NPs, primary care NPs, nurses, clinicians, peers, and other team members regarding diagnosis, medications, integrated care, suicide risk, substance-use treatment, and recovery-oriented practice.
• Provide ACT psychiatric leadership consistent with NC Medicaid Clinical Coverage Policy 8A-1 and the applicable North Carolina ACT fidelity model, including designated and consistent team hours, direct services to ACT beneficiaries, active collaboration with the ACT Team Leader, and shared responsibility for beneficiary treatment and team clinical practice.
