The Office of School Health (OSH) is a joint program of the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, responsible for promoting the health of 1.3 million school-aged children in approximately 1,800 public and non-public schools across New York City. OSH provides NYC Health Code-mandated clinical services, public health initiatives, chronic disease management, reproductive health care, and case management to ensure that students are healthy and ready to learn. OSH Physicians also review medical accommodations, respond to public health emergencies, and coordinate with community providers to support the health and safety of students. The CMS II (supervising Physician) will orient, train and supervise School Health Physicians, including providing guidance for direct medical services, chronic disease management and case management. They will work within the mandates, policies and protocols of the Office of School Health, ensure the provision of mandated services, and attend to the health needs of a designated school community. The role involves providing direct clinical services to an assigned panel of schools and serving as a consultant to school physicians, school nurses, and school administrative staff regarding school-related health concerns. The position also supports the development of school educational and prevention programs promoting student health and wellness, completes accommodation reviews and appeals efficiently using sound clinical judgment, and participates in meetings concerning student medical needs at school. Additionally, the Supervising Physician will provide clinical assistance during environmental or communicable disease occurrences, function as a liaison for students with community health providers, participate in the agency's Physician-on-call rotation, and maintain good public relations and effective communication within the school community. The role also supports all medical initiatives put forth by the Office of School Health, such as Asthma, Reproductive Health, Obesity, and Diabetes Initiatives.
