About The Position

The Supervising District Attorney Investigator plans, organizes, directs and supervises the activities of a unit engaged in conducting investigations on criminal and/or civil law matters; to conduct the more complex or sensitive investigations; and to act for the Chief District Attorney's Investigator in that person's absence. This recruitment is being conducted to fill one full-time vacancy. The list established by this recruitment may also be used to fill current and future full-time, part-time, limited term, and extra help vacancies for up to one year.

Requirements

  • Ten years of current experience as a peace officer pursuant to California Penal Code Section 830.1, which includes criminal investigative experience
  • Equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in police science, criminology, public or business administration or closely related field. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for two years of the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License
  • Possession of the California Peace Officers Standards and Training Intermediate Certificate or higher
  • Must be United States Citizen

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, direct and supervise the activities of a unit engaged in conducting investigations on criminal and/or civil law matters
  • Conduct the more complex or sensitive investigations either independently or as a member of a team
  • Interview and take statements from witnesses and other individuals involved in assigned cases
  • May conduct administrative investigations of other staff
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of unit goals and objectives
  • Implement policies and procedures
  • Perform a variety of personnel actions including assisting with employee selections and promotions; conducting performance evaluations; and recommending disciplinary actions and dismissals
  • Supervise investigative assignments
  • Oversee work quality and effectiveness
  • Review and evaluate case files and investigation reports for trial readiness
  • Provide technical assistance to investigators conducting difficult investigations
  • Supervise major crime investigations
  • Consult with District Attorney and other attorneys concerning evidentiary matters and evaluation of witness testimony
  • Confer with trial attorneys on strategy and presentation of evidence
  • Review investigation reports for content and form
  • Meet with staff regularly to discuss problems and to coordinate unit activities
  • Serve as resource to staff and assist staff in making decisions
  • Make recommendations on cases, program objectives and departmental operations and procedures
  • Participate in establishing and developing departmental rules, policies and procedures
  • Explain, interpret and implement departmental policies and procedures
  • Conduct on-the-job training for less experienced investigators on laws, regulations and techniques regarding the collection of evidence, court presentations and the conduct of investigators
  • Coordinate with the Chief District Attorney's Investigator on staffing needs, work flow and assignment distributions
  • Maintain statistical records of amount and type of casework to input into workflow control and caseload management reports
  • Provide assistance to other law enforcement agencies
  • May participate in meetings with community groups and other organizations relative to law enforcement functions and activities
  • Answer questions and provide information to the public
  • Investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary to gain resolution
  • Prepare reports on investigations and other correspondence as required
  • Prepare statistical data requested by management staff
  • Serve as the Chief District Attorney's Investigator in that person's absence
  • Perform related duties as assigned
