About The Position

Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) is the largest civil legal services provider in the country, dedicated to fighting poverty and seeking justice for low-income New Yorkers. Manhattan Legal Services, a part of LSNYC, is seeking a dynamic and committed attorney to serve as a Supervising Attorney in its General Housing Unit. This role involves shaping the direction of the Housing Unit, developing community relationships, handling administrative and grant responsibilities, and identifying systemic housing issues for strategic litigation. The position also includes supervising the representation of tenants in various legal proceedings and developing affirmative litigation.

Requirements

  • Admitted to the New York State Bar.
  • Demonstrated passion for social justice and a commitment to working with low-income communities, including communities of color and LGBTQ+ communities, to advance equity.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience providing civil legal services to low-income people or comparable relevant experience.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in housing, landlord/tenant, or related advocacy.
  • Excellent analytical, writing, and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to supervise a diverse, fast-paced, and high-volume caseload.
  • Excellent leadership skills.
  • An ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging issues.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior supervision experience preferred, but not required.
  • Strong cultural or personal ties to the communities we serve preferred.
  • Fluency or proficiency in Spanish, a Chinese dialect or other languages prevalent in the communities we serve is helpful, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Housing Unit Director and co-supervisors to shape the direction of the Housing Unit.
  • Develop and strengthen relationships with partner community-based organizations.
  • Handle administrative and grant responsibilities.
  • Identify systemic housing-related trends for strategic litigation.
  • Handle and supervise the representation of tenants in housing court, administrative proceedings, affirmative litigation and appeals.
  • Help to develop and file affirmative litigation.
  • Co-counsel complex cases.
