About The Position

Durwest is hiring a Superintendent to oversee an occupied church/community facility in Nanaimo, BC, undergoing a major renovation and expansion (approx. 8-month duration). As the senior leader in the field, you will be responsible for driving project delivery through effective coordination, schedule control, safety leadership, and quality oversight, while maintaining operational continuity and protecting critical stakeholder relationships. This includes coordinating around ongoing church operations and events (notably Sundays), where portions of the building remain occupied and in active use throughout construction. Success in this role requires exceptional planning, proactive communication, and the ability to adapt quickly in a live environment where disruption must be minimized and user experience matters.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of progressive experience in construction supervision or site leadership roles
  • Proven success delivering projects within active 24/7 operational environments such as airports, hospitals, or similar facilities
  • Demonstrated ability to work on active demolition scopes within occupied/operating buildings
  • Deep understanding of construction sequencing, scheduling, QA/QC, and safety requirements
  • Strong leadership and mentorship abilities with a focus on building trust and performance
  • Comfortable using digital tools (e.g., MS Office, Procore, MS Project or similar scheduling software)

Responsibilities

  • Lead all on-site activities to ensure alignment with drawings, specifications, and project objectives
  • Manage site logistics, resource planning, and sequencing to maintain progress on the critical path
  • Build strong working relationships with subcontractors, consultants, inspectors, and authorities, reinforcing a culture of accountability
  • Partner with the Project Manager to ensure day-to-day operations support overall project delivery
  • Champion a respectful, solutions-focused site culture aligned with Durwest’s values
  • Provide visible leadership and ownership of site safety, ensuring compliance with Durwest’s Safety Program and WorkSafeBC regulations
  • Collaborate with the Health & Safety Manager and Site Safety Coordinator(s) to foster a safety-first environment
  • Model and enforce safe work practices through daily engagement and team communication
  • Uphold Durwest’s Quality Management Program to ensure consistent workmanship across all scopes
  • Conduct regular site inspections and coordinate resolution of quality concerns with trades and consultants
  • Support successful inspections, commissioning, and turnover through timely management of deficiencies and hold points
  • Maintain a high standard of organization, cleanliness, and professionalism on-site
  • Represent Durwest in all site meetings with owners, consultants, and other key stakeholders
  • Act as the primary point of contact for site-related matters, ensuring consistent communication with the broader project team
  • Provide regular updates on progress, risks, and site conditions to support planning and decision-making
  • Lead, mentor, and support all on-site personnel, reinforcing expectations for performance and behavior
  • Contribute to workforce planning by identifying training needs and emerging talent
  • Partner with People Operations to support performance reviews and ongoing staff development
  • Foster a high-accountability environment where people feel empowered, respected, and supported
