About The Position

State Mechanical Services (SMS) is seeking an experienced Superintendent to lead field operations across commercial and industrial mechanical construction projects. This is a leadership role responsible for safety, workforce management, project execution, customer relationships, productivity, and operational performance. The Superintendent serves as the primary field leader and plays a critical role in delivering projects safely, efficiently, and profitably. SMS combines the stability of a long-established mechanical contractor with the resources and growth opportunities of a private equity-backed platform, delivering complex HVAC, piping, plumbing, and mechanical construction projects across various markets. They invest in their people, promote from within, and provide opportunities for growth.

Requirements

  • Journeyman Pipefitter in good standing with UA Local 597 or equivalent mechanical construction experience
  • Experience leading field operations on commercial, industrial, healthcare, institutional, or mission-critical projects
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC, piping, plumbing, and mechanical construction systems
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, schedules, and contract documents
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements and construction safety practices
  • Strong leadership, communication, planning, and problem-solving skills
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites

Nice To Haves

  • Foreman, General Foreman, or Superintendent experience
  • Experience managing multiple projects and field teams
  • OSHA 30 Certification
  • Experience with Procore, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project, or similar platforms
  • Experience supporting estimating, procurement, or preconstruction activities
  • Demonstrated success developing Foremen and Apprentices

Responsibilities

  • Direct daily field operations across assigned projects
  • Supervise and develop Foremen, Journeymen, Apprentices, and subcontractors
  • Coordinate manpower planning and workforce deployment
  • Promote accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement
  • Execute projects in accordance with plans, specifications, schedules, and customer expectations
  • Coordinate construction sequencing and resource allocation
  • Resolve field challenges and support project milestones
  • Ensure accurate reporting and project documentation
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA, customer, and Company safety requirements
  • Conduct jobsite observations and quality reviews
  • Identify and mitigate project risks
  • Reduce rework through proactive planning and oversight
  • Monitor labor productivity and workforce utilization
  • Support labor budget and project profitability objectives
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce waste
  • Assist with change order identification and cost management activities
  • Serve as the primary field representative for SMS
  • Develop strong relationships with customers, contractors, and project stakeholders
  • Support customer retention and repeat business opportunities
  • Identify opportunities for additional work and project growth
