About The Position

A Superintendent of Utilities Maintenance and Repair, through subordinate supervisors, oversees the activities of multiple crews engaged in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of either Baltimore City’s water distribution, wastewater collection or storm drains system. Work of this class involves directing the activities of construction and maintenance, equipment operation and office support work units. Incumbents receive general supervision from a technical superior.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Five years of experience in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of a water distribution system or storm water and wastewater collection system.
  • Two years of supervisory responsibilities including disciplining, evaluating performance, and recommending hiring, firing, and promoting of other supervisors.
  • Possession of a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license.
  • Eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit.
  • Must upload a copy of a valid driver's license with the application.
  • Must apply within 30 days to obtain a temporary State of Maryland Wastewater Collection Class C2 or Water Distribution Class D1 Certifications issued by the State of Maryland Board of Waterworks and Waste Systems Operators (for those hired/promoted after March 1, 2015).
  • Proof of temporary licenses must be submitted to the supervisor and Human Resources within six months of hire (for those hired/promoted after March 1, 2015).
  • Must obtain and maintain Permanent State of Maryland Wastewater Collection Class C2 or Water Distribution Class D1 Certifications issued by the State of Maryland Board of Waterworks and Waste Systems Operators within three years from the date or hire/promotion (for those hired/promoted after March 1, 2015).
  • Employees hired into this classification prior to March 1, 2015, must obtain and maintain temporary or permanent Wastewater Collection Class C2 or Water Distribution Class D1 certifications as a condition of continued employment.
  • Those employees with a temporary certification issued by the State of Maryland Board of Waterworks and Waste Systems Operations must obtain a permanent certification within six years of having obtained their temporary certification.
  • Knowledge of the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of water mains, water meters, sanitary sewers, storm drains, manholes and inlets and related appurtenances.
  • Knowledge of equipment, materials and tools used in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of a water distribution and wastewater collection system.
  • Knowledge of the methods, techniques, standards, tools and equipment used in street and highway maintenance and repair work.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and procedures pertaining to maintenance and repair of utility systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings of valves, water mains and water services, water pipes and mains, sanitary sewers and storm drains.
  • Ability to detect, analyze and correct defects in a water distribution or wastewater collection system.
