About The Position

The Superintendent is responsible for the operation and maintenance of Onaman Ziibi. The operation and maintenance will include ensuring that all equipment is in good working condition, that buildings and properties are safe, and that guest cabins are clean and meet COVID-19 guidelines.

Requirements

  • Persons of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment)
  • Ability to communicate in one of the First Nations dialects of the Sioux Lookout region is an asset.
  • Secondary school diploma combined with post-secondary education, apprenticeship, or technical training in a skilled trade such as carpentry, plumbing, HVAC/heating and cooling, electrical, maintenance, or a related construction or building services field. Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience deemed acceptable by the employer may also be considered.
  • A minimum of 1 year of related experience in building maintenance or a skilled trade such as carpentry, plumbing, HVAC/heating and cooling, electrical, maintenance, or a related construction or building services field.
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain valid First Aid, CPR, and Naloxone certification/training
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety practices, procedures, and safe work methods
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make timely decisions in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Basic knowledge and ability to safely use maintenance tools, equipment, and materials related to building maintenance and skilled trades work
  • Demonstrated reliability, dependability, and ability to respond to maintenance issues in a professional and timely manner

  • Ability to communicate in one of the First Nations dialects of the Sioux Lookout region is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Complete ongoing maintenance and repair duties at Onaman Ziibi, including but not limited to minor carpentry, painting, drywall patching, replacing light bulbs and fixtures, hanging doors, basic plumbing repairs, septic system monitoring and maintenance, and general building upkeep
  • Perform general cleaning and upkeep of all buildings, common areas, equipment, boats, and vehicles to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for guests, clients, staff, and community events
  • Perform housekeeping and laundry duties including making beds, sweeping and mopping floors, dusting, cleaning washrooms and common areas, changing linens, laundering towels and bedding, and stocking supplies as required
  • Maintain garbage disposal areas, recycling systems, hazardous or biohazard waste disposal procedures, and ensure proper sanitation standards are followed
  • Ensure SLFNHA property, facilities, and equipment are secured and maintained in accordance with organizational policies, health and safety requirements, and applicable legislation
  • Complete lawn maintenance, snow removal, groundskeeping, and seasonal property clean-up as required
  • Arrange, coordinate, and assist maintenance workers, tradespersons, and contractors with required repairs, inspections, and project work
  • Identify health and safety hazards, maintenance concerns, and security issues; report, document, and, where appropriate, correct issues within the scope of the position
  • Remain on-site and available to respond to on-call maintenance, safety, security, and guest support requests during scheduled shifts or designated on-call periods
  • Monitor and ensure alarms, fire safety equipment, security systems, generators, and related building systems are functioning properly and report deficiencies as required
  • Work collaboratively with emergency services, including the OPP, fire department, ambulance services, and other responders regarding incidents or emergencies occurring on the property
  • Maintain daily logs, inspection records, maintenance documentation, incident reports, inventory records, and other required documentation accurately and in a timely manner
  • Complete all mandatory training required for the position and actively participate in staff meetings, safety meetings, and organizational activities
  • Maintain inventories of maintenance, housekeeping, safety, and operational supplies and report damages, shortages, or losses
  • Receive and coordinate deliveries, shipments, and supplies arriving at the property
  • Provide respectful, professional, and culturally safe interactions with guests, clients, Elders, community members, and staff attending camps, gatherings, ceremonies, retreats, and events
  • Support the preparation and maintenance of camp spaces, event areas, and facilities for cultural, community, and organizational programming and activities
  • Perform all other related duties assigned within the scope of the position
