Superintendent of Public Works
About The Position
Allegany County is seeking a qualified and experienced leader to oversee the development, maintenance, and operation of a secure and reliable public works infrastructure throughout the County. Under the general direction of the County Administrator, the Superintendent of Public Works directs operations across all Department of Public Works divisions, including Buildings and Grounds, Bridges, County Highway, DPW Administration, Engineering, Road Machinery, Solid Waste, and Weights and Measures. The position requires maintaining important working relationships with internal and external contacts on matters related to Public Works. Performs related duties as required.
Requirements
- Thorough knowledge of civil engineering and general engineering principles and practices relating to highway construction, reconstruction, and repair, as well as building design, construction, maintenance, and repair.
- Thorough knowledge of administrative techniques and practices, including relationships between contractors, public agencies, and the general public.
- Thorough knowledge of budgeting, financial recordkeeping, and personnel administrative control.
- Ability to plan, organize, and effectively direct the work of others, while working cooperatively with related firms, agencies, and personnel.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with labor organization employees, union representatives, and management.
- Ability to analyze and resolve administrative and engineering problems and make sound decisions.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with public officials, professional personnel, and the general public.
- Ability to use computer applications, including spreadsheets, word processing, email, and database software.
- Demonstrates initiative, resourcefulness, good judgment, and tact.
- Possession of a valid New York State Class D driver’s license at the time of appointment and throughout the duration of employment.
- Must be a United States citizen, at least 18 years of age, and a resident of New York State and Allegany County.
