About The Position

Plan, organize and assist in the design, beautification, construction and maintenance of the City's parks, gardens, trees, playgrounds and park facilities. Works closely with the community in relation to these activities makes recommendations for action and assists in development of policy procedures and budgets; directs the work of supervisors, technical and support staff. Integral to the position of Superintendent of Parks is the responsibility for developing subordinates to their fullest potential by exercising appropriate degrees of coaching, training, guiding, evaluating, correcting and, if necessary, disciplining.

Requirements

  • Skills in personnel, equipment and budget management.
  • Knowledge of developing and managing public parks; turf management, mowing practices, irrigation systems operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of building maintenance standards and practices, including playground and safety guidelines with building and constructions skills i.e. plumbing, electrical, carpentry, concrete, masonry, etc.
  • Knowledge of supervising and training personnel.
  • Ability to supervise, train, provide leadership, organize and evaluate the work of others and to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
  • Ability to prepare and administer budget.
  • Ability to establish effective, courteous working relationships with employees, senior management, patrons, user groups and general public while exercising good judgement.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which will include evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to obtain Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of accepting position.
  • Must attend a work release supervisor training class annually.
  • Operates a variety of equipment used in routine maintenance, including mowers, trucks, tractors, chainsaws, forklift, bobcat, boom truck and other equipment used in the maintenance of parks.
  • Office equipment such as computer and related software programs, telephone, hand radio, calculator and fax machine.
  • There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Five or more years’ experience required.
  • All applicants must pass a drug screening and criminal background check prior to employment.

  • Bachelor’s degree in business management or closely related field preferred or any combination of education and work experience to provide the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, administers and monitors the park maintenance budget.
  • Selects, trains, motivates and evaluates assigned full time and part time seasonal employees. maintains payroll time and records for the maintenance division.
  • Works with the director to develop and maintain policies and procedures.
  • Participates in and supervises park maintenance activities and equipment repair. coordinates in-house renovations of park projects.
  • Organizes and plans appropriate schedules for employees and projects. coordinates the use of equipment and supplies.
  • Works with and assists other departments, outside agencies and park staff on special projects.
  • Promotes good safety practices and procedures among park crew and staff.
  • Maintains positive working relationship with public when addressing resident concerns.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
