About The Position

Steel America, a business unit of Colonna’s Shipyard, is seeking a Superintendent II to support operations at our site Norfolk, VA. Superintendent II will oversee key aspects of the project's progress within the Inside Machine Shop. The Inside Machine Shop handles various types of machining, propulsion shafting, and job shop/one-off projects. This role supports the determination of needed personnel, equipment, materials, and facilities, assists in establishing basic priorities and work sequences, and helps maintain a balanced workload among subordinates by properly distributing work projects and allotting manpower, equipment, and materials. The Superintendent II will also act as a Machining Subject Matter Expert (SME), for Steel America’s Fabrication Shop providing deep, practical machining knowledge to the project planning process. This role will proactively prevent problems before they reach the shop floor. The Superintendent II supports the management of repair, maintenance, and modifications of machinery, propulsion shafting, and other equipment or facilities assigned to a specific region or operating company. This may include projects allocated in support of Steel America’s Fabrication specific projects within the Inside Machine Shop.

Requirements

Must have at least six (6) years of experience in shipyard operations, with a focus on machined and mechanical components.
Must have at least four (4) years of experience in a machine shop or heavy industrial repair environment in a management-type capacity, running multi-trade crews on commercial and/or naval components.
Must have a clear understanding of contract value and current costs.
Must have strong communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to act as a spokesperson.
The ability to translate complex machining details into clear reports for all stakeholders is critical.
Must have experience with Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
Must have strong planning and project management skills.
Must have an improvement and achievement-oriented mindset.
Must have a thorough knowledge of machining processes, including various types of machining, and repair processes for large components like propulsion shafting.

Responsibilities

Acting as a go-to expert to ensure every machining aspect of complex projects is planned correctly from the first sketch to the final cut.
Being involved early in the project planning process with project managers, superintendents, and leadership from Fabrication and CSI.
Advising on designs and materials and determining critical timelines for machining tasks.
Scrutinizing blueprints and specs with a machinist's eye to spot potential issues, suggesting design changes for efficiency, and confirming material allowances.
Directly managing the machining portions of project budgets, handling specialized material orders, and approving tooling and supply requisitions.
Assisting in the oversight of shop-based machining and repair projects, which includes supporting the development of budgets and schedules, contractor selection, contract management, and interfacing with regulatory agencies.
Assisting in the development and adherence of maintenance and repair budgets, as well as controlling expenditures within a designated project's budget.
Preparing and presenting status reports to customers, project teams, and management, often in collaboration with the Superintendent.
Supporting the Superintendent in supervising timely and cost-effective maintenance, repair, modification, and refurbishment projects of various machined components and equipment.
Monitoring contractors during projects and reporting progress and issues to the Superintendent.
Conducting on-site surveys to determine machining, maintenance, and repair needs and providing findings to the Superintendent or Director of Machining as needed.
Exercising independent decision-making authority within established guidelines set by the Superintendent or management.
Assisting with the overall responsibility for schedule adherence.
Working closely with assigned Supervisors to ensure they understand their responsibilities within the machine shop, escalating concerns to the Superintendent as needed.
Collecting and reporting physical progress each week for their jobs to the Superintendent.
Working closely with representatives from various classification societies and governing agencies, as applicable to machining and propulsion shafting projects, under the Superintendent's guidance.
Working independently to complete assigned responsibilities, escalating issues as appropriate.
