About The Position

Mullins Mechanical is a leader in industrial and large commercial mechanical, plumbing, HVAC construction projects. Our projects are often in the industrial and manufacturing environments, such as manufacturing facilities, automotive plants, chemical plants, distribution centers, warehouses, and other large commercial facilities. We are a self-performing specialty contractor specializing in design-build applications, HVAC systems, plumbing, process piping systems, boiler and chiller systems, equipment installation and rigging, plant relocation and maintenance, and metal fabrication. This role involves reporting directly to the Field Operations Director and providing regular updates on field commissioning progress, manpower, startup activities, project readiness, and field challenges. The Superintendent will execute the commissioning plan, direct and supervise daily field commissioning activities, and lead commissioning technicians, startup personnel, subcontractors, manufacturers, and specialty vendors. Key responsibilities include coordinating daily manpower and priorities, developing startup schedules, coordinating equipment startup with various stakeholders, verifying system readiness, and supervising startup and functional performance testing of HVAC, plumbing, process piping, mechanical equipment, controls, and integrated building systems. The role also involves coordinating system flushing, pressure testing, balancing, controls integration, identifying and resolving deficiencies, maintaining punch lists and documentation, and ensuring compliance with contract requirements and safety standards. Additionally, the Superintendent will conduct startup safety meetings, support owner demonstrations and training, submit documentation for closeout, and mentor field personnel.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in mechanical construction, HVAC, plumbing, process piping, controls, startup, or commissioning.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience leading field operations on large-scale construction projects.
  • Extensive experience with equipment startup, testing, balancing, controls integration, and system commissioning.
  • Thorough understanding of construction sequencing, field operations, startup procedures, and integrated building systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, P&IDs, equipment submittals, control diagrams, and sequences of operation.
  • Strong troubleshooting, leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Experience coordinating subcontractors, equipment manufacturers, and specialty vendors during commissioning activities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Procore, Bluebeam, and construction management software.
  • OSHA 30 certification required or ability to obtain.
  • Ability to travel extensively to assigned project sites.

Responsibilities

  • Report directly to the Field Operations Director and provide regular updates regarding field commissioning progress, manpower, startup activities, project readiness, and field challenges.
  • Execute the commissioning plan developed by the Commissioning Project Manager.
  • Direct and supervise all daily field commissioning activities on assigned projects.
  • Lead commissioning technicians, startup personnel, subcontractors, manufacturers, and specialty vendors throughout commissioning activities.
  • Coordinate daily manpower, work assignments, and commissioning priorities.
  • Develop and maintain daily and weekly startup schedules that align with project milestones.
  • Coordinate equipment startup with manufacturers, controls contractors, TAB agencies, electrical contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Verify that systems are complete, operational, and ready for startup prior to commissioning activities.
  • Supervise startup and functional performance testing of HVAC, plumbing, process piping, mechanical equipment, controls, and integrated building systems.
  • Coordinate system flushing, pressure testing, balancing, controls integration, and equipment verification.
  • Identify commissioning deficiencies, troubleshoot system issues, coordinate corrective actions, and verify successful resolution.
  • Maintain field commissioning punch lists, deficiency logs, startup records, and testing documentation.
  • Coordinate commissioning activities with Project Superintendents, Project Managers, Project Engineers, Quality, Safety, and field operations personnel.
  • Ensure commissioning activities comply with contract requirements, project specifications, manufacturer recommendations, and company quality standards.
  • Conduct startup safety meetings and ensure compliance with Lockout/Tagout procedures and other commissioning safety requirements.
  • Support owner demonstrations, training sessions, and final system turnover.
  • Submit complete and accurate field commissioning documentation to the Commissioning Project Manager for project closeout.
  • Mentor field personnel on commissioning procedures, startup best practices, and safe execution of commissioning activities.
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
