About The Position

Sunrise Day Camp - Staten Island is seeking individuals aged 18 and older to serve as counselors for children ages 3 1/2 - 16. This unique camp is the only dedicated full summer day camp globally for children with cancer and their siblings, designed to address their emotional, social, recreational, and physical needs while they stay at home each night. Beyond the summer program, Sunrise Day Camp also offers year-round camp-like programs at its campgrounds and other exclusive facilities. Importantly, the camp is provided free of charge to all children undergoing cancer treatment and their siblings, funded through external donations to alleviate parental stress and costs. The counselor role is demanding, requiring maturity, responsibility, energy, and a commitment to making a significant impact. Staff work closely with campers from arrival at 8:30 AM to departure at 4:00 PM for up to seven weeks, needing to be attentive to individual camper needs and willing to go the extra mile. Specialty areas include sports, art, music, drama, and dance.

Requirements

• Familiarity with camps and various outdoor activities

• Aged 18 years and older

Responsibilities

• Plan activities for groups of campers
• Create weekly or daily schedules taking into account children’s age, groups, and interests
• Lead recreational and educational activities
• Escort and oversee children
• Educate campers through games and explorations
• Set up and maintain equipment
• Make sure all safety rules are followed
• Ensure camping site is clean and that campers don’t litter
