About The Position

Wildwood School, a part of Wildwood Programs, provides a comprehensive educational program for students with autism spectrum disorders, and developmental disabilities to prepare them to be as independent as possible. Academic, social, employment, and functional skills are taught to each student as driven by their Individual Educational Plan (IEP), needs, and interests. The PE teacher will collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team to design and execute a comprehensive physical education program that balances broad curriculum goals with individualized milestones; with the objective to ensure physical activity serves as a primary vehicle for each child’s holistic growth, health, and inclusion.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from a regionally accredited four-year college or university
  • 1yr experience
  • NYS Teacher Certification
  • Word processing, E-mail, Internet software, Google suite
  • A valid New York State Driver’s License and ability to drive and driving record acceptable for agency insurance coverage are required.
  • Must have daily access to their own vehicle and drive our students when the program requires it.
  • Required to complete, pass, and use CALM training, provided by the school, which includes deescalation strategies and approved protective holds and movements for students.

Responsibilities

  • Plans the physical education program to promote development of student's physical attributes and social skills.
  • Provides direct educational services to students in accordance with IEP requirements, including use of available tests, checklists, and observation to determine learning style, level of skills, and growth in cognitive areas.
  • Teaches individual and team sports to students, utilizing knowledge of sports techniques and of the physical capabilities of students.
  • Organizes, leads, instructs, and referees indoor and outdoor games such as volleyball, baseball, and basketball.
  • Instructs individuals or groups in beginning or advanced calisthenics, gymnastics, or corrective exercises, determining type and level of difficulty of exercises, corrections needed, and prescribed movements.
  • Confers with students, parents, and school counselors to resolve student problems.
  • Selects, stores, orders, issues, and inventories equipment, materials, and supplies used in the physical education program.
