About The Position

The Summer Student Public Affairs Assistant will support the Edmonton Humane Society’s advocacy initiatives under the direction of the Senior Manager, Reputation & Brand. Key duties include researching priority animal welfare and community issues, assisting in the development of communication and advocacy materials, and collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders to gather insights. This role offers a valuable opportunity for a student in public policy, communications, law, or community engagement to gain practical experience and contribute to meaningful animal welfare advocacy.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in post-secondary studies in Communications, Political Science, Law, Public Relations, Non-Profit Management, or a related field.
  • Experience conducting research or collecting information through school, volunteer, or work projects.
  • Exposure to writing or editing reports, summaries, or communication materials.
  • Experience working collaboratively on group projects or coordinating feedback.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent research and analytical abilities.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Comfortable using digital collaboration tools.
  • Demonstrate an interest in animal welfare, public policy, or community engagement.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous involvement in non-profit, advocacy, or community initiatives is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on current and emerging animal welfare and advocacy issues.
  • Support the design, collection, and analysis of primary research such as surveys or stakeholder feedback.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to collect relevant information and solicit input on advocacy priorities.
  • Maintain organized documentation and summaries of research findings.
  • Assist with drafting letters, position statements, and other supporting documents related to advocacy initiatives.
  • Help prepare presentations, briefing notes, talking points and supporting materials for meetings and outreach.
  • Contribute to the development of evidence-based recommendations and policy positions.
  • Ensure accuracy, consistency, and alignment with EHS’ mission and messaging.
  • Assist in developing communications plans and materials to support advocacy initiatives.
  • Help coordinate outreach to external stakeholders and community partners.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas for advocacy campaigns and engagement opportunities.
  • Support communication and outreach efforts to internal and external stakeholders as needed.
