About The Position

This position is for a summer student hydrology technician at Chatham University, focusing on data management and analysis of hydrologic data from the Fernow Experimental Forest. The role involves organizing and analyzing a large database of information such as temperature, conductivity, discharge, and pressure, using tools like Excel and R. The student will also be responsible for generating graphs and maps based on the data. Fieldwork is a component of the role, requiring travel to the site 2-4 times per month for data collection and equipment maintenance. There is an opportunity for the student to present their work at a professional conference in Fall 2026 or Spring 2027. Student employees are subject to specific work hour limitations, including not exceeding 20 hours per week during the academic year (across all campus jobs) and a maximum of 980 hours per calendar year. Student positions do not automatically renew. Requirements

  • Must be a student
  • Proficiency in data management and analysis using Excel and R
  • Ability to travel to the field site 2-4x/month
  • Current student employees should notify their other manager(s) if working multiple jobs on campus at the same time
  • May not work more than 20 hours per week (combined between all campus jobs) during the academic year
  • May not exceed 980 work hours per calendar year

Responsibilities

  • Manage and organize a large database of hydrologic data from the Fernow Experimental Forest including temperature, conductivity, discharge, and pressure
  • Statistically analyze data
  • Generate appropriate graphs and maps
  • Travel to the field site 2-4x/month to collect data
  • Perform equipment maintenance
  • Present a poster or talk at a professional conference in the Fall of 2026 or Spring of 2027 (opportunity)
