About The Position

The MISO 2027 Summer Internship Program is seeking students pursuing degrees in Cybersecurity, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Technology, Network Security, Information Technology, or related fields for a career-igniting summer internship. The program offers the opportunity to make a real impact by driving innovations that boost system reliability, resilience, and performance, and tackling complex technical challenges in the energy industry. Interns will help protect the electric grid by supporting real cybersecurity operations, learning about threat identification and defense strengthening, and improving team processes. The internship also includes community service events, social activities, networking, and development programming, culminating in a final project presentation.

Requirements

  • Pursuing Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Security, Network Security, or related fields (undergraduate or graduate).
  • Have taken classes or done projects involving networking, operating systems, cybersecurity fundamentals, incident response, scripting, or log analysis.
  • Can work with or learn tools like Splunk (SPL), Microsoft Defender, SentinelOne, Ironscales, ServiceNow (SIR), GitHub, SIEM/EDR/NDR, and languages such as Python, PowerShell, SQL, KQL, JavaScript.
  • Are curious, collaborative, accountable, and comfortable diagnosing problems, asking questions, and improving workflows.
  • Show strong analytical skills and can explain technical problems in clear, simple language.
  • Available to start Wednesday, June 2nd, 2027 and continue through Friday, August 13th, 2027.
  • No VISA sponsorship opportunities, including OPT/CPT.

Responsibilities

  • Help protect the electric grid by supporting real cybersecurity operations—building simple automations, improving detections, analyzing logs, or assisting with threat hunts.
  • Learn how cybersecurity teams identify suspicious activity, investigate incidents, and strengthen defenses using industry tools and hands-on workflows.
  • Improve CTAC and Security team processes by identifying recurring issues and proposing practical solutions that make daily operations easier and more effective.
  • Attend community service events, intern socials, networking activities, and development programming to help you grow your confidence, build relationships, and understand MISO’s broader mission.
  • Wrap up the summer with a final presentation summarizing your project work, recommendations, and areas of impact.
