About The Position

First Citizens Bank offers an exciting summer internship program that provides development opportunities and hands on work experience while creating a talent pipeline for the Bank. Our interns will apply classroom knowledge in a corporate environment while making a positive impact across the organization and the communities we serve. We are seeking a curious, analytical, and highly motivated Summer Intern to join our Card Product Management team, focused on the evolving intersection of commercial cards, B2B payments, fintech platforms, and business spend management. The intern will work alongside product and strategy leaders to explore how businesses pay, manage spend, and interact with modern financial technology platforms. The role will provide hands-on exposure to the product management lifecycle, including market research, customer and competitive analysis, product strategy, business case development, and go-to-market planning. The broader market is increasingly connecting commercial payment capabilities directly into the platforms businesses use.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED and 1 year of experience
  • Currently enrolled at an accredited collegiate institution (during the time of the summer program)
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week during the duration of the program

Nice To Haves

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor or Master's Degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Comp Science, Data Analytics
  • Interested in product management, payments, fintech, banking and/or B2B commerce
  • Experience conducting market, customer or competitive research
  • Comfortable working with data, using excel and/or visualization tools to generate insights
  • Exposure to APIs, SaaS platforms or digital development
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with an interest in identifying customer problems and developing new solutions
  • 3.0 Minimum GPA

Responsibilities

  • Support card product strategy by researching customer needs, market trends, competitive offerings, and emerging technologies across commercial cards and B2B payments.
  • Explore B2B spend use cases, including procurement, accounts payable, expense management, virtual cards, embedded payments, and other business payment workflows.
  • Analyze fintech and platform trends to understand how software platforms are changing the way businesses access and use payment capabilities.
  • Develop competitive landscapes across banks, card networks, fintechs, payment providers, and spend-management platforms.
  • Help evaluate new product opportunities, translating customer problems and market insights into product concepts, hypotheses, requirements, and potential business cases.
  • Partner cross-functionally with colleagues across Product, Technology, Sales, Risk, Operations, Finance, and other functions to understand how payment products move from idea to execution.
  • Use data to develop insights on product performance, customer behavior, addressable spend, or market opportunities.
  • Contribute to product roadmaps and go-to-market thinking, including product positioning, target customer segments, value propositions, and commercialization strategies.
  • Develop an end-of-summer recommendation or product proposal addressing a meaningful opportunity within commercial cards, B2B payments, or fintech-enabled business spend.
  • Be part of a dynamic team with interesting projects.
  • Accountabilities can and may include areas such as research, analytics, projects, strategy, process review and improvement, as well as technology enhancements and support.
  • Attend professional development sessions, informational sessions, networking and community service events.
  • Have a dedicated manager and program manager to help you navigate the bank and the internship program.
  • Be assigned a project, designed to improve a specific process or solve a problem that you will present at the close of the internship.
  • Prepare a wrap-up presentation to be shared with the division leader and other key stakeholders in the company to outline your accomplishments and experience during the internship.
  • Accountabilities assigned by the intern’s direct manager, area or department leadership. Accountabilities may include areas such as branch operations, sales processes, research, analytics, projects, strategy, process review and improvement, as well as technology enhancement assessment and support. Amongst or in addition to these accountabilities, a business aligned project should be assigned. This project will be presented to local leaders and other key stakeholders in the company.
