About The Position

Live Oak Bank is a digital bank serving small business owners nationwide, focused on providing innovative technology and services. This 10-week onsite internship program, from May 17 to July 23, 2027, at their Wilmington, NC headquarters, offers hands-on experience in architecture and engineering. The architecture team collaborates with other departments and engineering teams to bring technology needs from concept to completion, aiming to streamline technology deployment and enhance efficiency for users like lenders, analysts, and operations staff. Interns will contribute to integrating new vendors and AI into daily banking processes, creating designs and proofs of concept, and delivering features for internal tools. The role involves understanding business needs, translating them into technical approaches, rapid prototyping with AI coding tools, working with existing codebases, writing and testing integrations, documenting designs, and presenting final work. Interns will also maintain awareness of regulatory requirements such as BSA, AML, CIP, and OFAC, and will be paired with a mentor for guidance.

Requirements

  • Sophomore, junior, or senior pursuing a degree in computer science, computer engineering, or an equivalent field.
  • Experience using coding tools like VS Code or similar.
  • Experience using Git repositories and platforms such as GitHub or GitLab.
  • Working proficiency in at least one programming language: Python, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, or C#.
  • Ability to read and understand code you didn't write.
  • Familiarity with APIs and how systems communicate, including REST and JSON.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Curiosity and comfort with ambiguity.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using AI coding tools and workflows such as Claude Code or Cursor, including connecting them to external systems through MCP servers.
  • Experience building and deploying a working application, even a small personal project.
  • Exposure to a cloud platform such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Coursework or projects involving system design, software architecture, or technical diagramming.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines or automated testing.
  • Interest in financial services, fintech, or working in a regulated industry.
  • A prior internship, hackathon project, or open-source contribution.
  • Familiarity with low-code, no-code, or workflow automation tools.

Responsibilities

  • Sit in on conversations with business teams to understand their needs and translate them into a technical approach.
  • Build proofs of concept quickly, using AI coding tools to accelerate development.
  • Read and work within existing codebases.
  • Write and test integrations between internal systems and third-party vendor platforms.
  • Document designs for future reference.
  • Present completed work to engineers and stakeholders at the end of the internship.
  • Maintain a high standard of regulatory awareness including BSA, AML, CIP, and OFAC.
