The Food Bank CENC is a sponsor of the USDA Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which provides free meals to children during the summer months. Meals are distributed at community-based sites such as parks, schools, playgrounds, housing communities, day camps, churches, and community centers from June through August. The program is often paired with educational and recreational activities to support children’s overall well-being. The SFSP Summer Intern supports the Food Bank’s administration of the SFSP from May - August.

Requirements

• Current undergraduate student pursuing a bachelor’s degree, preferably in Public Health, Social Work, Nutrition, Human Services, Nonprofit Management, or a related field.
• Rising sophomore, junior, or senior in good academic standing.
• Demonstrated experience in customer service, community engagement, or administrative support, gained through work, internships, volunteer roles, or campus involvement.
• Technical Proficiency – Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and comfortable learning new technology platforms (e.g., CRM, data reporting tools, inventory systems).
• Exceptional Communication Skills – Strong written, verbal, and presentation abilities; able to translate complex ideas into clear, compelling messages for diverse audiences.
• Community Engagement Skills – Skilled at fostering trust, facilitating dialogue, and engaging diverse community members in program delivery.
• Analytical Thinking & Attention to Detail – Adept at gathering, interpreting, and applying data to improve programs and inform decision-making.
• Sound Judgment & Integrity – Demonstrates ethical decision-making, discretion, and professionalism in all interactions.

• Bilingual Skills – Ability to speak and write in Spanish highly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide operational and administrative support to program sites.
• Support and implement organizational and site-level outreach efforts to help achieve target participation at each sponsored site.
• Conduct the required sponsor-monitoring visits in Wake County, including initial and four-week visits.
• Ensure site compliance with recordkeeping requirements, including daily and weekly meal count records and required program documentation.
• Support the overall management of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), including assisting with the recruitment of additional sites.
• Assist with operations at non-congregate meal distribution sites.
• Review and support reconciliation of delivery receipts from congregate food vendors.
