About The Position

The Orleans County YMCA is seeking enthusiastic individuals to join our team as Summer Day Camp Counselors. This role involves implementing curriculum, designing and leading daily activities, and ensuring the safety and well-being of children in our care. Counselors will foster the physical, intellectual, social, cultural, and emotional development of each child, while maintaining positive relationships with children, parents, and staff. This position requires active participation in all camp activities, including land and water-based events, and maintaining program areas and equipment.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Previous experience working with children is preferred.
  • Ability to implement curriculum and design lesson plans.
  • Strong supervisory and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships with children, parents, and staff.
  • Knowledge of child development and safety procedures.
  • Ability to participate in land and water-based activities.
  • Punctuality and professional demeanor.
  • Ability to follow YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a camp setting.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience with diverse age groups.
  • Leadership experience.

Responsibilities

  • Implement curriculum within established guidelines.
  • Design and implement daily lesson/activity plans.
  • Supervise children, classroom, and all activities.
  • Make ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.
  • Conduct parent conferences and maintain positive relationships and effective communication with parents.
  • Engage parents as volunteers.
  • Maintain program site and equipment.
  • Maintain required program records.
  • Attend and participate in family nights, program activities, staff meetings, and staff training.
  • Promote the physical, intellectual, social, cultural, and emotional well-being of the children.
  • Work with the staff team to plan and implement activities.
  • Provide direct leadership to the assigned group(s) and maintain constant visual contact with all assigned children.
  • Participate in daily activities and aid the children in completing tasks, including land and water-based activities.
  • Assist in assessing child abilities and developmental stages.
  • Build enthusiasm for activities and programs.
  • Complete required documentation regarding attendance, health and wellness, sign-in and sign-out, and other items as assigned.
  • Notify parents if children are not in attendance.
  • Keep the program areas neat and organized.
  • Follow all safety procedures.
  • Follow all regulating agency and YMCA child care policies, regulations, and procedures.
  • Maintain friendly, positive, and professional relationships with children, parents, school & day care partners, and other YMCA staff.
  • Project a positive image of the YMCA and the Day Care program.
  • Follow work site requirements regarding punctuality, appropriate dress, staff meeting attendance, etc.
  • Carry out tasks as assigned by the Site or Program Director.
  • Assist in program and YMCA recruitment and special events.
  • Work YMCA Camp Days and alternate program locations as scheduled.
