Summer Day Camp Counselor
About The Position
The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties is seeking a Summer Day Camp Counselor to join our team! The YMCA focuses on empowering people in all forms, by improving health and well-being and inspiring action in and across our neighborhoods. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading non-profit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. As a Summer Day Camp Counselor, you will get to know a small group of campers and supervise them through a range of fun activities such as swimming, playing games, participating in sports, and learning arts and crafts all while keeping them engaged and safe. The Day Camp Counselor will directly supervise campers and assist with planning and implementing daily camp activities for a group of 7-10 campers, including small and large group activities designed to engage campers and create a fun and memorable experience. Provide a quality experience to children and parents that focuses on the YMCA values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
Requirements
- Six months or more of related experience (preferred).
- Positive attitude and previous experience with children and diverse populations
- Knowledge and skills in day camp program activities and related equipment set-up, and the ability to instruct participants in age-appropriate techniques.
- Must be able to pass Background and Reference checks (in accordance with the WA State Fair Chance Act).

- Able and willing to complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on the first day, and other online and in-person training as required
- Complete Child Abuse Prevention training on first day and other online training as required
- Regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
- Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds and seldom lift or move a higher amount.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- May need to plan and participate in programming outdoors.
Responsibilities
- Plan, lead, and assist group activities, transitions, time fillers, and songs.
- Complete group head counts.
- Provide parent communication through parent communication cards.
- Complete accident and incident reports when necessary.
- Cleaning and sanitation protocols will be required of all staff.
- Assist Unit Leader and Activity Leaders in specialty camps.
- Embraces and actively promotes an inclusive and equitable work environment.
- Other duties as assigned.
