About The Position

Provide safe transportation to and from program sites and field trips while maintaining a supportive and positive atmosphere for youth programs. May also provide support in other areas as assigned. Monitor equipment and perform limited maintenance. Daily times vary, but average 20-40 hours a week.

Requirements

  • Minimum one school year of work experience as a school bus driver and be a current Bellingham School District employee.
  • At least 21 years of age or older
  • Knowledge of the rules/guidelines related to commercial passenger vehicles (bus).
  • Emotional, social, and physical capability to work with children and other adults in a group setting.
  • Good health, enthusiasm, and above standard character.
  • Must have, or be in the process of obtaining the following: Valid Washington State CDL Driver's License, Current Health Exam Card per CDL requirements, Negative TB Test, HIV, Bloodborne Pathogen training, Standard First Aid Certification, Infant/Child & Adult CPR Certification, 5 Year Driving Abstract, submitted annually.

Responsibilities

  • Drive a leased school bus, proving safe and efficient transportation to parks, events, and field trip locations, according to YMCA policies and procedures and state laws.
  • Complete thorough before-and-after trip checks each day and record all information.
  • Records gas level, mileage, and maintenance on designated forms.
  • Maintain records of work performed; makes timely reports of accidents, incidents, and unusual occurrences.
  • Notify supervisor of any mechanical concerns related to the vehicle immediately.
  • Promote safety at all times by keeping first aid supplies fully stocked.
  • Ensure that bus rules are announced and followed.
  • Develop friendly and positive relationships among Y staff, volunteers, parents, and children.
  • Communicate regularly with other staff members and supervisor.
  • Pick up and deliver bus from leasing company on dates designated by supervisor.
  • Provide general assistance to the camp and camp staff.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Park the bus in a secure location during field trips.
  • Stay at the group's destination either with the bus or with the group.
  • Conduct a complete walk around inspection of the bus each time you return to check for vandalism or damage.
  • Be accessible and available within 15 minutes of group contact for out-of-town field trips.
  • Conduct a follow-up check of the vehicle for sleeping children, missing belongings and/or damage to the vehicle after a counselor check.
  • Attend all staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Handle emergencies in accordance with YMCA emergency policy.
  • Follow all policies and procedures related to Bellingham School District Transportation Department regarding storing the bus and securing the facility.
  • Read and follow the YMCA Child Abuse and Neglect Rules of Conduct.
  • Read and follow the YMCA Code of Conduct.
  • Read and follow the YMCA guidelines for working with children as outlined in the Discipline Policy.
  • Report any suspicions of possible child abuse to the Family Enrichment Director and/or Associate Director immediately and keep proper documentation.

  • Reimbursement for driving expense at $0.25 per mile for pick up and drop off of leased bus OR providing a YMCA vehicle to use for transport.
