About The Position

As Bike Patroller at our mountain resort, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and enjoyment of guests and maintaining the integrity of our biking trails. You will patrol designated mountain areas on bicycle, assist riders, enforce safety regulations, maintain signage and ropes, assist with trail work, and respond to emergencies as needed. This position requires a strong commitment to safety, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic outdoor environment. This position is 90%+ field work.

Requirements

  • Strong biking skills (Intermediate or better) and knowledge of mountain biking techniques and equipment.
  • Ability to obtain UT EMT License, OEC and WFR also considered, BLS/CPR.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with guests and colleagues.
  • Ability to hike, bike, and work in a mountain environment while carrying heavy equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of bike maintenance.
  • Current Driver's License and the ability to pass a background check to drive resort maintenance and rescue vehicles.
  • Ability to use a computer and for documentation and record keeping.
  • Basic knowledge in Microsoft 365 programs.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions and terrain, including steep, rugged terrain and high altitudes.
  • Physical fitness and stamina to perform bike patrols and respond to emergencies as needed.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as required by resort operations.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in outdoor recreation, biking, or related field preferred.
  • Current EMT level certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol assigned biking trails and designated areas of the mountain on bicycle, monitoring hazards, obstructions, and unsafe behavior.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to riders, including directions, trail recommendations, and equipment checks.
  • Learn to perform morning and evening trail checks.
  • Enforce resort policies and safety regulations on biking trails, including speed limits, trail closures, and helmet requirements.
  • Educate guests on safe biking practices, Mountain Biker responsibility code, and proper trail etiquette.
  • Proficient in documenting injuries in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Respond promptly to accidents, injuries, or other emergencies on the mountain.
  • Administer first aid as needed to appropriate medical certification level, assess the situation, and coordinate with emergency services for additional assistance if required.
  • Proficient in search and rescue in the backcountry.
  • Conduct routine inspections of biking trails to identify and address maintenance needs, such as trail erosion, signage damage, or fallen debris.
  • Report any maintenance issues to the appropriate department for resolution.
  • Set up and maintain mountain signs and markings by following the current NSAA guidelines and recommendations of insurance carrier.
  • Ability to use a variety of tools and equipment in a mountain environment.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to guests, answering questions, providing information, and addressing concerns or complaints in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Basic understanding of lift operations and the ability to operate a chair and bike hauler.
  • Proficient in lift evacuations using specialized equipment.
  • Provide breaks for lift operations as needed.
  • Maintain regular communication with resort staff, including ski patrol, lift operators, and guest services, to coordinate efforts and share important information regarding trail conditions, incidents, and guest feedback.
  • Assist other departments as needed and/or directed.
  • Promote environmental stewardship and Leave No Trace principles among guests and staff.
  • Encourage responsible trail use and proper waste disposal practices to minimize the resort's ecological impact.
  • Conduct routine inspections of UTV’s or other off-road vehicles approved for bike patrol operations.
  • Conduct daily bike inspection.
  • Proficient in operating the machines on designated routes pre-determined by rescue plan.
  • Proficient in chainsaw and brusher operation and basic maintenance.
