Services include adult and child psychiatric, substance abuse, case management, residential, Crisis Care, and therapy programs, as well as career development and wellness services. Zepf Center also offers primary care medical services to our patients to contribute to their continuum of care. Zepf Center is a trauma-informed agency and environment for both patients and staff. The Night Shift Unit Manager mirrors the Day Shift position with additional responsibility for maintaining safe and efficient overnight operations when executive leadership and providers are not routinely onsite. The SUD Inpatient Unit Manager is responsible for the overall clinical, operational, and personnel management of the inpatient nursing department during the assigned shift. The Unit Manager provides leadership and oversight for all nursing staff working within Withdrawal Management, Residential, and Crisis Stabilization services while ensuring safe, evidence-based, trauma-informed patient care. This position serves as the clinical leader for the shift and is responsible for maintaining regulatory compliance, supporting nursing staff, coordinating patient care with providers, responding to emergencies, ensuring documentation accuracy, and promoting continuous quality improvement. The Unit Manager functions as both a nursing leader and working clinical resource while fostering a culture of accountability, professionalism, collaboration, and excellence.

Requirements

  • Current Ohio RN License (Required)
  • Minimum 3 years nursing experience
  • BLS Required
  • CPI Required

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct supervision of all inpatient nursing staff including CSU nursing personnel.
  • Serves as the clinical resource for complex medical situations.
  • Assists with admissions when necessary.
  • Assists with discharges and transfers.
  • Provides clinical oversight for Withdrawal Management (3.2/3.7), Residential (3.1/3.5), and CSU.
  • Coordinates nursing response during medical and psychiatric emergencies.
  • Ensures rapid assessment and stabilization of deteriorating patients.
  • Oversees CIWA, COWS and other withdrawal assessments for accuracy.
  • Reviews medication administration for accuracy and safety.
  • Ensures compliance with provider orders.
  • Assists providers with complex clinical decision making.
  • Directly supervises all inpatient nurses during assigned shift.
  • Responsible for daily assignments, break coverage, clinical support, performance coaching, competency oversight, documentation review, workflow management, shift communication, delegation, and escalation of employee concerns.
  • Provides immediate coaching regarding nursing assessments, medication administration, emergency response, infection prevention, documentation, and professional conduct.
  • Ensures efficient daily operations including staffing assignments, bed board accuracy, admission flow, transfers, discharges, medication inventory, controlled substance accountability, supply management, and equipment readiness.
  • Monitors shift productivity, nursing workload, staffing needs, and patient acuity.
  • Coordinates staffing adjustments as necessary.
  • Responsible for daily auditing of nursing assessments, admission documentation, discharge documentation, MAR accuracy, CIWA documentation, COWS documentation, incident documentation, provider communication, and nursing notes.
  • Ensures compliance with CARF, OhioMHAS, CMS, DEA, Nursing Practice Act, Agency Policies, and Medication standards.
  • Identifies documentation deficiencies and provides immediate corrective education.
  • Participates in chart audits, incident reviews, Root Cause Analyses, Performance Improvement projects, competency validation, skills assessments, and mock emergency drills.
  • Monitors trends involving medication errors, falls, Code Blue activations, emergency transfers, AMA discharges, and documentation deficiencies.
  • Provides recommendations for improvement.
  • Responsible for onboarding newly hired nurses.
  • Coordinates clinical orientation, skills validation, annual competencies, mock emergency scenarios, hands-on training, BLS competency reinforcement, and policy education.
  • Serves as mentor to new nursing staff.
  • Serves as liaison between Providers, Nursing Staff, Behavioral Health, Pharmacy, Admissions, Medical Director, Director of Nursing, and Ancillary Departments.
  • Provides effective shift report to Night Unit Manager.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary rounds.
  • Promotes a culture of accountability, compassion, professionalism, patient safety, trauma-informed care, teamwork, respect, and continuous improvement.
  • Leads by example.
  • Functions as the highest-ranking nursing leader during overnight hours.
  • Coordinates all overnight admissions.
  • Oversees after-hours medical and psychiatric emergencies.
  • Serves as primary escalation point for all nursing staff.
  • Coordinates transfers to emergency departments or higher levels of care.
  • Performs overnight chart audits and prepares follow-up items for the day shift.
  • Verifies controlled substance counts and resolves discrepancies.
  • Ensures completion of overnight assessments, medication administration, and documentation.
  • Monitors patient safety rounds and observation compliance.
  • Coordinates staffing adjustments and call-offs overnight.
  • Ensures readiness of the facility for day shift operations, including admissions, supplies, and medication inventory.
  • Communicates all significant overnight events during formal handoff to the Day Shift Unit Manager.
