About The Position

Join a brand-new residential treatment program in San Rafael and make a meaningful impact as an overnight Substance Use Disorder Counselor II. Buckelew Programs' new 15-bed Rising Recovery Center is dedicated to providing compassionate, high-quality care to individuals navigating co-occurring substance use and mental health challenges—offering you the opportunity to be part of something from the ground up. As a Substance Use Disorder Counselor II, you’ll bring your certification as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor to deliver hands-on, life-changing support. You’ll guide clients through assessments and intakes, support their recovery journey with individualized counseling, and help shape thoughtful discharge plans. Your role will also include medication monitoring, crisis intervention, and fostering a safe, structured, and supportive environment where residents can stabilize and grow. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current certification as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor through CADTP, CCAPP, or another certifying body recognized by the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS).
  • Certification must be maintained in good standing as a condition of employment.
  • At least two (2) years of recent and relevant experience working with individuals with substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health conditions, or dual diagnoses is preferred.
  • Familiarity with AA/NA 12-Step programs and recovery resources.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to engage and support clients with empathy, firmness, and respect.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities in a dynamic environment.
  • Team-oriented with a willingness to learn and grow professionally.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Valid California driver’s license and insurable driving record.
  • Knowledge of community resources in Marin County is a plus.
  • Negative TB test clearance (required by DHCS).
  • Ability to perform intermittent physical activities including bending, reaching, lifting (up to 40 lbs), and standing/walking for extended periods.
  • Ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct client assessments, intakes, discharges, and maintain accurate and timely chart documentation.
  • Provide individual counseling and emotional support to clients throughout the detoxification process.
  • Make appropriate referrals and respond to the personal needs of clients.
  • Respond to crises appropriately, including de-escalation and teamwork-based intervention.
  • Triage emergency situations and determine when emergency medical services (911) should be contacted.
  • Document incidents and relevant client information in the staff log to ensure continuity of care.
  • Coordinate and track volunteer contributions and donations as needed.
  • Ensure client and staff safety at all times.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and client confidentiality in accordance with program policy.
  • Facilitate and monitor client groups as assigned.
  • Monitor self-administered client medications in accordance with protocols.
  • Participate in regular supervision with the Program Director.
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings and participate in staff trainings
  • Help maintain program structure and support the mission and goals of the Rising Recovery Center.
  • Identify and report facility maintenance needs and supply inventory.
  • Assist with facility chores such as laundry and cleaning and oversee client participation in daily chores.
  • Provide transportation using personal or agency vehicles as needed.
