About The Position

Under the supervision of the Youth Development Program Manager, the SUD Counselor provides substance use disorder (SUD) education and counseling to middle and high school students in Oceanside. Responsibilities include facilitating SUD prevention forums and workshops for parents, caregivers, and community members; conducting substance use screenings; delivering SUD-focused case management and treatment; and coordinating linkages and referrals to appropriate services. The SUD Counselor works with youth who may benefit from specialized interventions and treatment targeting co-occurring substance use and mental health symptoms, with the goal of reducing barriers and supporting improved mental health and overall functioning.

Requirements

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish strongly preferred. Bilingual pay available
  • Registered in the state of California as a SUD Counselor, or ability to be registered within 30 days of hire and actively working towards certification.
  • BA in psychology, social work, human services plus 2 years related experience or equivalent experience in substance abuse and/or counseling, co-occurring treatment highly desired.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, training, and experience in Cognitive Behavioral Interventions, DBT, or Seeking Safety highly desired.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation with a good driving record.
  • Willing to use your own, properly insured, reliable vehicle for the job (mileage reimbursed).
  • Employment subject to clearances, including background fingerprinting checks, driving record, tuberculosis testing, and drug testing.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strength-based and culturally sensitive SUD education and counseling services to youth at schools, parents/caregivers and community members at Oceanside Community Resource Centers, and at other community settings
  • Helps clients to identify and connect to activities that would positively impact their social, leadership and coping skills, as well as their physical, mental, and emotional health.
  • Screen youth utilizing the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory (SASSI) and the ASSIST-Y.
  • Completes outreach and presentations relating to substance use disorder and early intervention services to students, parents, and staff at school and community sites.
  • Communicates regularly with the Youth Development Case Managers, Clinicians, regarding client SUD treatment
  • Utilizes a trauma informed, client-centered, culturally respectful approach and abides by the legal and ethical standards of the profession.
  • Maintain consistent documentation and information-sharing in alignment with confidentiality standards and organizational policies
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
