Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 2+ years of experience in utility locating, subsurface utility engineering, surveying, geophysical investigations, or related field services
  • Experience operating electromagnetic utility locators, ground penetrating radar (GPR), and related utility detection equipment
  • Knowledge of underground utility systems, utility construction practices, and utility mapping principles
  • Familiarity with ASCE 38 utility quality level standards and utility engineering best practices
  • Ability to read and interpret utility plans, construction drawings, survey plats, and utility records
  • Experience using GPS equipment, data collectors, GIS applications, and digital field data collection platforms
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately document field observations and utility information
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds; walking over rough and uneven terrain; standing for up to 12 hours a day on occasion; bending, stooping, kneeling, and twisting; using hands to grasp and reach; raising hands above the head; sitting; climbing; and balancing
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary project teams
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background check.

Nice To Haves

  • associate degree in surveying, engineering technology, geography, GIS, or a related field preferred
  • Certification in subsurface utility engineering, utility locating, or related disciplines is a plus
  • OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety certification is preferred
  • Experience with vacuum excavation, hydro-excavation, survey equipment, or GIS software is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Performing utility investigations and utility mapping services in accordance with ASCE 38 Standard Guidelines for Investigating and Documenting Existing Utilities.
  • Conducting utility locating activities using electromagnetic locators, ground penetrating radar (GPR), and other utility detection technologies.
  • Identifying, designating, and documenting the horizontal and vertical locations of underground utilities, including water, sewer, storm drain, electric, gas, telecommunications, and fiber optic systems.
  • Performing Quality Level B utility designations and supporting Quality Level A utility test hole investigations.
  • Collecting field data using GPS, survey equipment, utility locating devices, and field data collection software.
  • Reading and interpreting utility records, as-built drawings, engineering plans, and survey documents.
  • Coordinating utility investigations with project managers, survey crews, engineers, utility owners, contractors, and government agencies.
  • Marking utilities in accordance with project requirements and industry standards.
  • Assisting with vacuum excavation and hydro-excavation operations to expose underground utilities safely.
  • Preparing accurate field notes, sketches, utility reports, and documentation for project deliverables.
  • Maintaining and calibrating utility locating equipment, GPS units, and other field instruments.
  • Ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and project-specific health and safety requirements.
  • Participating in traffic control setup and maintenance as required for field operations.
  • Coordinating with utility owners and reviewing utility records to support utility engineering investigations.
  • Traveling to project sites throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Supporting survey, geospatial, and engineering teams with utility-related data collection and project coordination.
  • Experience coordinating utility mark-outs through Miss Utility/811 programs is preferred.
  • Performing additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
