About The Position

The Substitute Teacher's role involves being available to substitute teach at least 4 days per month when school is in session. Substitutes are typically notified in advance, but same-day calls are also common due to unexpected illnesses. The primary function is not to lead a homeroom but to act as a Class Instructor or Teacher's Aide, focusing on teaching reading, math, and spelling groups using Direct Instruction programs. Responsibilities also include supervising students during lunch, recess, and transitions to and from specialized classes (Art, PE). During DIBELS Benchmark Assessments (grades K-6), the substitute will be part of the assessment team, assisting administration in testing students three times a year (September, January, May). DIBELS assessment duties take priority if called during these periods.

Requirements

  • Must be available to substitute teach at least 4 days per month throughout the entire school year.
  • Must respond to phone calls and/or emails from staff immediately (if called the morning of) or within a 4-hour timeline (if called in advance).
  • Must possess good organization skills to coordinate home, family, work, and school responsibilities.
  • Must be willing to work whenever needed.
  • Must be comfortable asking questions when clarifications are needed.
  • Must be willing to do what is asked and also what may not be asked but still needs to be done.
  • Must take the initiative to step up and do all he/she can to ensure students receive a quality education when teachers are absent.
  • Must have a positive attitude, a ready smile, a happy disposition, and a sense of humor.
  • Must be flexible to step in and work even when things change at the last minute.
  • Must be willing to travel between campuses to fill in vacancies.
  • Must be willing to put in as much time as needed.
  • Must have a desire and willingness to lighten the load and clear the way for the teacher or instructor.
  • Must be willing to ask questions if unsure of expectations.
  • Must be willing to listen to input from Administration regarding mission, vision, and philosophy.
  • Must be willing to work closely and in harmony with other staff members, accepting their input and direction.
  • Must be trained in Direct Instruction programs.

Responsibilities

  • Be available to substitute teach at least 4 days of each month school is in session.
  • Attend Direct Instruction training in the summer.
  • Prepare to teach reading, math, and spelling groups (when called in advance).
  • Read scripts, prepare copies, and ask questions.
  • Follow teacher instructions.
  • Maintain classroom management standards.
  • Keep data and records in the Data Binder.
  • Supervise students during lunch and recess.
  • Report any problems to the homeroom teacher or applicable staff.
  • Attend all meetings (when applicable).
  • Work closely with staff members to ensure student safety and engagement.
  • Assist Administration in assessing K-6 students using DIBELS benchmark assessments during specified periods.
  • Supervise students during transitions to and from Art, PE, and other groups.
