About The Position

The Alabama School for the Blind (ASB) is seeking to fill a pool of Substitute Teachers. The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is a comprehensive educational, rehabilitation, and service program for individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, or have multiple disabilities, and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves over 30,000 individuals annually across Alabama through its campuses, regional centers, Early Intervention services, and Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB). ASB is one of AIDB's three K-12 schools, providing specialized education to empower students with hearing and vision loss. Employees are considered valuable assets, and the organization is committed to leveling the playing field for all.

Requirements

  • Must be able to obtain or hold a valid Alabama Substitute License or hold a valid Alabama Teaching Certificate.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must be physically able to perform the job.
  • Must follow all AIDB policies and procedures and state and federal laws.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.

Responsibilities

  • Assumes the responsibility for instructing classes when a teacher is absent.
  • Assumes other responsibilities for that teacher during the time the teacher is absent.
  • Assumes responsibility for overseeing pupil behavior in class and during lunch and other activities.
  • Must remain awake and alert at all times.
  • Must be able to adhere to confidentiality requirements.
  • Must be able to handle emergency situations in a calm manner.
  • Must have the ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
