About The Position

Part-time work at the Y offers flexible hours with meaningful impact on your community. Substitute Teachers are responsible for providing a high-quality learning experience that supports children’s physical, social-emotional, and cognitive development. This role includes preparing, implementing, and cleaning up classroom activities; assisting with the arrival and departure of children; and maintaining accurate classroom records. Substitute teachers are expected to communicate professionally and effectively with parents and staff. They must uphold the highest standards of safety and supervision at all times. Substitute teachers may be assigned to Early Learning or School-Age programs and should be flexible to work early morning or evening shifts as needed. Substitute Teachers must claim one shift at least every 3 months.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Complete required trainings as specified in Michigan State Licensing for Childcare Centers
  • Blood Borne Pathogen training
  • CPR Certification required within the first 60 days
  • First Aid Certification required within the first 60 days
  • State of Michigan criminal background clearance (ICHAT)
  • Fingerprinting
  • Documentation of physical exam

Nice To Haves

  • 1 year of childcare experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily center operations, including opening and closing procedures, setting up and organizing materials, arranging classrooms, and completing routine clean-up tasks.
  • Facilitate morning procedures by greeting families, taking attendance, and communicating relevant information to the Center Director or Assistant Director.
  • Supervise children during indoor and outdoor activities, collaborating with the Center Director, Assistant Director, or Lead Teacher to support the implementation of age-appropriate curriculum.
  • Maintain the daily schedule to meet children’s developmental needs and lead daily group time activities.
  • Perform routine non-instructional care duties, including assisting with clothing, feeding, and toileting as needed.
  • Participate in classroom task rotations, including activity preparation, clean-up, daily classroom responsibilities, and overall center cleaning.
  • Adhere to YMCA policies and procedures related to the safe and authorized departure of children from the center.
  • Model positive, respectful, and professional communication with parents and guardians, while maintaining strict family confidentiality.
  • Follow up with parents as directed by the Center Director or Assistant Director and complete required documentation or reports as needed.
