The Substitute Teacher provides a warm, nurturing, stimulating, safe and loving environment where each child can develop language, cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills appropriately. This role involves becoming the Primary Caregiver/Teacher when a regular classroom teacher is absent, assisting in implementing culturally sensitive educational activities, and maintaining a positive environment using positive guidance techniques. The position also requires adherence to federal, state, local, and accreditation standards, following policies regarding medical and dental emergencies, and ensuring safe practices to prevent injuries. Maintaining sanitation and hygiene procedures, fostering effective communication with families, encouraging parent involvement, and eating with children to promote proper habits are also key aspects of the role. For Early Head Start, this includes following infants' individual feeding schedules and holding infants who cannot sit independently while feeding. Regular communication with other staff, a cooperative attitude, and effective record-keeping, including maintaining children's portfolios during extended staff absences, are expected. The role may also involve kitchen and/or cleaning duties.
